Job Description
Overview:
The Lab Animal Technician will perform husbandry and care functions for research animals, while carefully following facility standard operating procedures with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities:
  • Maintain experimental integrity when moving animals and cages.
  • May train and/or guide other employees and monitors personnel entering/exiting building
  • Recognize and understand the consequences of not performing or following facility procedures appropriately such as: causing the death of an animal, invalidating research data, loss of research funding and/or infection, and contamination of self and others.
  • Complete records for animal husbandry.
  • Observe, record, and report common signs of clinical illness and/or irregularities in laboratory animals such as: variations in dietary habits, water consumption, abnormal feces or urine, unusual behaviors, etc.
  • Provide feed, water, clean cages, and enrichment devices for conventional, BSL-2and BSL-3 animals in a safe and sanitary manner.
  • Transport animals, cages, and equipment to and from satellite facilities using university vehicles.
  • Check and record animal room environmental parameters including temperature, humidity, room air pressure, and light cycles and inform supervisor of changes which are out of normal ranges.
  • Supply inventory and sanitation procedures accurately.
  • Operate cage washing and sterilizing machines.
  • Perform facility sanitation procedures (sweeping, mopping and disinfecting) which include handling and mixing of chemicals.
  • Verify and replenish room supplies for each animal species.
  • Observes, records, and reports common signs of clinical illness and/or irregularities in animals to attending veterinarian.
  • Assist washroom personnel.
  • Provide coverage of the duties of laboratory animal caretakers/cagewash staff as needed.
  • Mark animal cages using appropriate identification methods.
  • Record animal inventory accurately.
  • Assists research technicians in resolving problems and provides research support.
  • Independently perform custodial/maintenance tasks to research facility and equipment to maintain accreditation standards:
  • Decontaminate BSL-2 and BSL-3 hazardous material following facility guidelines by autoclaving.
  • Work with hazardous agents (chemical, radiological and BSL-2 and BSL-3 bio hazards) in animals.
  • Inform supervisor of animal or facility problems.
  • Assists in maintaining accreditation standards.
  • Administers veterinary care as directed by University veterinarian
  • Assemble research equipment.
  • Assist other animal caretakers.
  • Wash lab clothing.
  • Physically handle, restrain and move animals without injuring the animals or endangering themselves.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
  • Lift and move bags of feed (50lbs), bedding, and other supplies.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience working with animals in a veterinary facility, research clinic or equivalent OR an Associate’s degree in a Life Sciences or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hepatitis B and tetanus vaccination, and other vaccinations will be required before successful candidate begins work.
  • Achieve Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from AALAS within 1 year of beginning employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience with animals in any capacity.
  • B.S in Animal Science or any related Biological field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Able and willing to learn principles and practices of Laboratory Animal Science.
  • Able and willing to work with hazardous / toxic, radioactive and BSL-2 hazardous agents after attending appropriate training on an annual basis for certification.
  • Able and willing to learn Federal regulations and policies pertaining to laboratory animals.
  • Able to communicate, understand and follow instructions and facility guidelines in English.
  • It is necessary to complete the job before leaving work; animal care cannot be held over to the next day and providing the highest level of care to animals is essential to LARC’s mission. Animal care is a 7-day per week, 365-days per year job. All tasks must be performed to fulfill guidelines and regulations according to USDA and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (which is the main resource used by AAALAC's Council on Accreditation)
  • Able and willing to attend required personal hygiene and personal safety training on an annual basis for certification.
  • Able and willing to operate washing and sterilizing equipment after training.

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions, such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Employees may work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods.

Employees may be exposed to hazardous conditions including, noise, vibrations from machinery, moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, and atmospheric conditions that can affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.

The primary goal of the LARC is to provide animal care which exceeds minimum standards that have been established for laboratory animals. Animal care within the Center is in accordance with “The Animal Welfare Act”, PHS “Policy on Humane Care and Use of Animals” and DHEW “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”. All laboratory animals used in research on campus are housed in this facility or the satellite facility in the Biotechnology Center.
