Job Description

Primary Function:

The Lead CNC Programmer is responsible for overseeing the CNC programming activities and providing technical expertise to the CNC programming team. This role requires a deep understanding of CNC programming principles, proficiency in CAD/CAM software, and the ability to optimize programs for efficient and accurate machining. The Lead CNC Programmer collaborates with cross-functional teams, trains and mentors junior programmers, and ensures the successful execution of CNC machining operations.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Collaborate with the manufacturing and engineering teams to implement process improvements, tooling enhancements, and automation solutions to optimize CNC machining operations.
  • Lead and supervise the CNC programming team, providing guidance, technical support, and training to ensure the delivery of high-quality CNC programs.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to operators, machinists, and other team members regarding CNC program execution, tooling selection, and machining processes.
  • Develop and optimize CNC programs for a variety of machines, including mills, lathes, combos, lasers, and robotics, to meet production requirements.
  • Perform machine setup and prove-out of CNC programs to validate accuracy, quality, and adherence to specifications.
  • Collaborate with design and engineering teams to review drawings, models, and specifications for manufacturability and provide feedback for design improvements.
  • Train and mentor junior programmers, providing guidance on CNC programming techniques, best practices, and quality standards.
  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot and debug CNC programs, machine tool issues, and machining processes to ensure smooth production operations.
  • Conduct tooling selection, toolpath optimization, and cycle time analysis to maximize efficiency and minimize production costs.
  • Develop and maintain a library of CNC programs, ensuring proper version control, documentation, and accessibility.
  • Utilize CAD/CAM software (Mastercam) to create, modify, and optimize CNC programs, ensuring accurate tool paths, machining parameters, and work instructions.
  • Monitor and analyze production metrics and quality data to identify opportunities for process optimization and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, engineering, and quality assurance, to ensure seamless integration of CNC programming processes within the overall manufacturing workflow.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in CNC programming, machining technologies, and industry trends.

Skills:

  • Must have superb problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken formats
  • Knowledge in use of precision measuring instruments
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Must have high aptitude for mechanics
  • Ability to read in-depth drawings including GD&T
  • Strong foundation in material science
  • Capability to work closely with department supervision and production workers
  • The ability to fabricate prototypes, iterate rapidly from concept to high volume production

Qualifications:

  • Proficient in drawing, symbology and terminology
  • MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Outlook, etc…) proficiency required
  • Lean Trained – certification a plus
  • 5+ Years CNC machine set up and programming
  • 8+ years in machine shop environment
  • Must possess current and valid driving record with clear history for the past three years
  • Deep knowledge of Mastercam
  • Metal working industry experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of sitting and/or walking (33% – 75% of time)
  • Stooping, bending, twisting, leaning (10% – 25% of time)
  • Lifting of up to 25 lbs. occasionally (0% – 33% of time)

Work Environment:

  • Frequent work in a manufacturing environment where the use of proper protective equipment (PPE) such as eye protection, hearing protection and safety shoes is mandatory
