Good Molecules is seeking a Junior Formulation Chemist to work full-time, on-site in Philadelphia, PA. In this role, you will be responsible for various formulation and laboratory experimentation, development, sample preparation, and basic testing projects, as well as managing laboratory inventory and other related responsibilities. You will report to the Director of Research & Development and join an innovative and entrepreneurial team to develop and deliver formulated consumer products to support Good Molecules' goals and our primary mission of helping people see a difference in their skin.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Maintain an organized and presentable laboratory, including:
- Calibrate and clean glassware, utensils, and equipment as needed
- Order samples and ingredients and keep the inventory up-to-date
- Engage in formulating, reverse formulating, and testing for various custom projects
- Perform, monitor, and document pre-stability and stability testing on R&D batches
- Package and ship samples for analysis to third-party labs
- Keep up to date with relevant scientific and technical developments and trends

- Perform formulation tasks such as:
- Engage in formulating, reverse formulating, and testing for various custom projects
- Make daily lab batches
- Perform, monitor, and document pre-stability and stability testing on R&D batches
- Package and ship samples for analysis to third-party labs
- Evaluate and communicate formulation efforts and results
- Write reports and summaries, including signing off stability reports
- Make daily lab batches
- Support scaling up and technology transfer to CMOs
- Write reports and summaries, including signing off stability reports

- Evaluate and communicate formulation efforts and results
- Maintain detailed and organized records of formulation developments and experiments
Preferred Technical Experience:
- Ability to record, document, and duplicate procedures
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, or a similar technical field
- Familiar with Good Laboratory Practices and scientific principles
- Experience with scaling up lab batches is highly desirable
- One year minimum of internship/industry experience in personal care and cosmetics required
- Ability to identify, fine-tune, and troubleshoot problems with formulations
- Experience with formulating for “clean beauty” skin care is strongly preferred
- Perform basic calculations with consistent accuracy (e.g. adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying, percentages, and unit conversion)
- Familiar with scales, mixers, pH meters, viscometers, centrifuges, high-shear homogenizers, and other formulation/quality control equipment
- Good technical foundation in two or more of emulsions, surfactants, soaps, suspensions, gels, ointments, pastes, pressed powders, sticks, powders, solutions, or accelerated shelf-life studies
Additional Requirements & Qualifications:
- Ability to maintain calm, poise, and professionalism under pressure
- Legally eligible to work in the US
- Ability to lift 50 pounds to your waist, 25 pounds to head height, and able to climb 10 stairs
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Attention to accuracy and detail in tasks and communication
- Competency with Google software (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.)
- Ability to preserve the confidentiality of all technical information, processes, data, and intellectual property
- Team player with demonstrated ability to follow instructions and work under minimal supervision
- Sense of urgency and time management in completing projects
- Travel within the US may be required 1-4 times per year
This is a full time, exempt role with an expected base salary ranging from $50,000 to $75,000/year, depending on education and experience levels.
