Job Description
Microsoft’s Democracy Forward Initiative (DFI) is hiring a Journalism Director, Microsoft Democracy Forward Initiative to support work related to the team’s journalism projects.
The Democracy Forward Initiative is part of Microsoft’s Technology for Corporate Responsibility (TCR) team and works globally to promote a healthy information ecosystem, safeguard open and secure democratic processes, and advocate for corporate civic responsibility.


Responsibilities

The Journalism Director, Microsoft Democracy Forward Program will work closely with owners of key programs on promoting a healthy information ecosystem, journalism, and media literacy with a focus on:
Journalism Community Liaison
  • Publicly representing Microsoft and the journalism program’s priorities at relevant conferences and gatherings.
  • Developing and delivering written products and presentation materials that are used to communicate team positions, strategy, and thought leadership;
  • Engaging with program/process owners, stakeholders and business partners as necessary to communicate project objectives, strategy, tactics, and ongoing progress;
  • Supporting 3rd party partner and vendor relationships, especially within the journalism portfolio, to ensure that Microsoft project requirements are met; and,
  • Responding to internal and external stakeholder needs in a timely manner; and,
  • Conducting outreach to potential and existing customers and onboarding new customers. Project Management and Strategy
  • Support for day-to-day tracking or project milestones, timelines and outcomes.
  • Supporting development and implementation of strategic plans; and,
  • Liaising with the journalism community, including local newsrooms, non-profits, academics, and news affiliated organizations in order to advance Microsoft’s journalism priorities globally;
  • Representing Microsoft at public gatherings and events focused on the future of journalism and the news business. Operations
  • Establishing new connections within the journalism community (non-profits, academics, and newsrooms) that help to push Microsoft’s work deeper into the community; and,
  • Helping to scale and expand existing programs. Communications

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Operations, Finance or related field AND 8+ years work experience in the news business, whether as a journalist, editor, or business operations.

Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft's products/services/applications preferred.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to distill large amounts of information concisely.
  • Advanced organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, used to working in de-centralized/virtual teams, with a proven ability to collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • 5+ years experience with information influence research or projects a plus. Knowledge and experience with democratic processes as well as trends in journalism, local news, and/or technology from both US and international perspectives a plus.

Business Program Management IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $124,800 - $266,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $159,000 - $292,200 per year.
