Job Description

Summary

We are seeking an IP Counsel to be at the forefront of protecting the intellectual property (IP) that is critical to GE Aerospace’s mission of inventing the future of flight. The IP Counsel will lead projects and initiatives with broad scope and high impact to the business and have high visibility to business and engineering leadership. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in various aspects of IP law and bring ambition, creativity, and accountability to implementing IP strategies across business units and engineering technology groups. The IP Counsel will report to either the Chief IP Counsel or Senior IP Counsel depending on depth of expertise and range of experience. Although proximity to GE Aerospace’s Cincinnati, OH headquarters is preferred, for the right professional candidate with qualifications matching the opportunity, remote work with periodic travel to Cincinnati may be available.

Essential Responsibilities

The IP Counsel will have lead responsibility for one or more of the following:

  • Investigating and pursuing enforcement of IP rights against third parties and/or defending against third party IP legal disputes through litigation or other dispute resolution activities, particularly with respect to patent and trade secret matters
  • Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating IP terms in a wide array of global transactions, including R&D agreements, technology licenses, NDAs, sale/purchase contracts, USG contracts, and M&A deals
  • Mitigating IP risks for cutting-edge technologies through freedom-to-practice analyses, third party patent landscaping, and adversarial patent validity challenges

As part of this role, the IP Counsel may also engage in some or all of the following:

  • Vetting and managing outside counsel engaged on IP dispute and transactional matters
  • Supporting pursuit and enforcement of trademark and copyright protection
  • Advising on data rights issues in US government contracts and proposals
  • Collaborating with other IP professionals to develop and execute sophisticated IP strategies
  • Collaborating with colleagues globally across the legal function, including commercial, contracts, sourcing, tax, and compliance in pursuit of business objectives and resolving business threats
  • Providing strategic guidance to support GE Aerospace’s IP asset development team (substantially devoted to patent preparation and prosecution) to ensure alignment with business objectives and maximize potential return on investment
  • Establishing or improving IP-related policies and procedures, including employing LEAN principles to standardize work and leveraging resources efficiently

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, organizational rigor, and business judgment
  • Member in good standing to a state bar within the United States
  • High ethical and professional responsibility standards
  • Strong ability to interface with, and influence, executive leaders through polished interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics from an accredited university or college
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
  • At least 5 years of experience practicing IP law in a firm, or in a law firm combined with an in-house corporate environment

  • Relocation assistance will be provided
