Job Description


The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) is seeking a motivated and flexible individual to join our team in the Health and Safety Division as a Fire Inspector for the Fire Safety Bureau.


Who We Are


DIA is a multifaceted regulatory agency charged with protecting the health, safety, and well-being of Iowans. Fire Inspectors conducts on-site Federal Life Safety Code surveys and revisits at health facilities in accordance with standards set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). They also perform on-site inspections, investigations and revisits of schools, colleges, jails, prisons, daycares, preschools, adult daycare centers, apartment buildings, hotels & motels, flammable liquefied petroleum facilities, and deteriorated structures within established time frames.


What We’re Seeking


The successful candidate for the fast-paced and multi-faceted Fire Inspector position is a


self-starter willing to learn all aspects of fire safety. The position reports directly to the Fire Safety Bureau Chief. The position requires state-wide and is home domiciled after training. Desired qualifications

What You’ll Do


You will be an integral member of our survey team, providing direct support to the Department’s operations by:


  • Completing assigned inspections in a timely manner
  • Making recommendations regarding non-compliance with applicable fire code.
  • Prepares accurate reports of all matters relating to inspections, complaint investigations.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all case information.
  • Answering inquiries from the public and providing presentation on fire safety requirements.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert on Iowa code, NFPA codes, International Fire Code and Building Code, Life Safety Code, and any and all additional relevant codes related to fire safety.
  • Exhibiting proficient computer skills to schedule inspections and utilize computer databases.
  • Obtaining and maintains CMS Fire Inspector 1 certification through the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
  • Maintaining valid driver’s license to operate state vehicle

Minimum Qualification Requirements


Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:


  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in law enforcement, corrections, criminology, police science, accounting, finance, or law, and experience equal to one year of full-time work in the administration of a program involving application of agency unemployment insurance or public assistance benefit programs, correctional rules and regulations, and/or court or administrative hearings processes.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as an Investigator 1 or twenty-four months of full-time work as a Warehouse and Grain Dealer Examiner.
  • A total of five years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one or two), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in law enforcement, corrections, criminology, police science, accounting, finance, or law equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in law enforcement, corrections, criminology, police science, accounting, finance, or law, and experience equal to one year of full-time work as an investigator requiring knowledge in law enforcement, corrections, or criminal investigation.
