What Your Job Will Be Like


Sandia National Laboratories is seeking to hire an experienced and highly motivated Fire Sprinkler Designer to help stand up a new In-House Design Group! This new team will provide Sandia with the internal capability to self-execute design services at Sandia National Labs in New Mexico. We are looking for a detail orientated individual to support a dynamic group of Architects and Engineers in the development, design, and construction of building and infrastructure projects!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Adhere to company safety policies and procedures to ensure all duties are performed in a safe and professional manner
  • Partner with the Estimation department, Design Manager, and Operations Manager to review the scope sheet and requirements of each project.
  • Perform field inspections of completed construction to verify accuracy.
  • Read and interpret construction documents, including drawings, specifications, and contracts.
  • Interpret and apply applicable NFPA standards to the design and/or layout of the sprinkler systems based on the building type, construction type, hazard classification and architectural features.
  • Communicate with AHJs, contractors, and other trades.
  • Design and layout sprinkler systems using specialized CAD software packages that are based on the AutoCAD, Autosprink, and HAAS platform.
  • Coordinate sprinkler system piping with other building components. Perform hydraulic calculations.
  • Gather information, perform hydraulic calculations, and prepare original layouts and sketches to present proposed designs.
  • Gather system level information in the field and incorporate the information into CADD and GIS environments.
  • Identify opportunities for cost-saving measures and quality improvement
  • Coordinate with team members for listing of required materials, permitting, and inspection requirements for fire sprinkler systems

This position requires the willingness to travel in support of work assignments; this position resides in Albuquerque, NM but could also provide support to other Sandia National Laboratory sites (e.g., California, Hawaii, and Nevada), as needed.

The successful candidate must be able to maintain a NICET Level III certification(s).

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 50% of the time.

Qualifications We Require

  • NICET Level III or higher certification in water-based systems layout.
  • High School diploma plus 5 or more years of experience designing water-based sprinkler systems; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q-Level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience using and interpreting the IBC and its referenced codes and standards (e.g., NFPA) applicable to a diverse set of operations that include hazardous, industrial, business, assembly, and storage occupancies.
  • Demonstrated experience working with architects, engineers, developers, contractors and building owners in the interpretation and compliance with adopted building and fire codes, regulations, and standards.
  • Understanding of applicable federal laws, regulations, building and fire codes, executive orders, and DOE orders related to fire protection and highly protected risk concepts.
  • Analytical, reasoning, and communication skills necessary to identify and resolve fire risk problems with the mission in mind and assist in making recommendations in oral and written form.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and AutoSprink
  • Visualize 3D concepts and solves basic mathematic problems, including geometry and algebra
  • Knowledge of the independent and interdependent relationship between applicable building codes, fire codes, and national consensus codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of the NFPA requirements associated with design and installation of fire protection systems.
  • Ability to specify suppression system solutions for unique hazards.
  • Experience in commercial and industrial design

This department provides architectural and design services for the division and for Sandia projects, programmatic equipment installations, and analyses for Sandia’s critical turn-around initiatives quickly and effectively which allows Facilities to increase its capacity to deliver design services with more agility.
