Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Discharge instructions upon request.
- Responds to interpreting assignments in an expedient and professional manner.
- Assists department representative with the orientation of all services available to the international patients and their families.
- Assists the department secretary with phone calls and voice mails.
- Common area and departmental signage.
- Advises medical staff and other staff of international customs and norms to enhance better relations, respect, and cooperation via departmental meetings and occasional discussion groups.
- Maintains proper medical terminology vocabulary and fluency both in English and target language.
- Provides accurate interpretation services over the telephone for: inpatient, outpatient, day surgery and emergency center.
- Triages telephone requests and calls and transfers to appropriate person/department.
- Ensures that interpretation appointment schedules are maintained accurately and timely.
- Provides written translation services while following established rules pertaining to word meaning, grammar and sentence structure.
- Facilitates information exchange by interpreting without editorializing and abides by a code of professional ethics.
- Provides oral interpreting services for Texas Children's hospital areas including: inpatient, outpatient, day surgery and emergency center.
- Responds to requests for telephone interpretation in an expedient and professional manner.
- Assumes on-call duties on a rotating basis.
- Accurately translates

- Common area and departmental signage.
- Provides oral interpreting of clinical and health care related discussions involving staff, patients, families and physicians.
- Patient education materials.
- Tracks each scheduled appointment and provide a reminder call to family 24 hours prior to appointment.
- Serves as a liaison between the international patients and families and the various service areas within the organization.
- Delivers video remote interpreting (VRI) devices to units/clinics as needed, and provides instruction on the use of the device.
- Attends meetings and trainings as requested.
- Patient communication notices upon request.
- Performs minimal clerical duties as needed.
- 2 years related healthcare experience required
- Being fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including any booster dose(s) of the COVID-19 vaccine recommended by the Centers for Disease Control when eligible, is required for all employees at Texas Children's unless approved for a medical or religious exemption.
- 2 years of document translation strongly preferred
- Bachelor's Degree Preferred
- 2 years healthcare interpreter experience strongly preferred
- H.S. Diploma or GED Required
