Job Description

The Graduate School is seeking an International Teaching Assistant Program (ITAP) Manager with primary responsibility for planning and carrying out all aspects of this program, providing the screening and training of approximately 200 international graduate students annually. Before placement as teaching assistants with direct instructional responsibilities, students must attend training and either clear the spoken English requirement or attend ITAP classes until skills improve to an acceptable level. The manager works with administrators, staff, faculty, and students to ensure compliance with ITA clearance requirements for participation in the Tuition Benefit Program, and monitors such compliance. The manager creates and coordinates classes, group tutorials, and individual consultations and oversees all aspects including curriculum design, selecting and supervising instructors, as well as providing technical support.
We seek an experienced, collaborative, self-motivated, candidate with exceptional organizational and planning skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and professionally with multiple, diverse stakeholders and partners are necessary. Applicants must also demonstrate excellent written and spoken communication skills. This a full-time, fully benefitted position that reports to the Dean of the Graduate School and works closely with the Graduate School’s Leadership Team. This position may include some evenings and weekend hours.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the duties of the ITAP Manager include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting in-person and virtual training sessions for international teaching assistants
  • Communicating with departments and educational units across campus about the ITA Program
  • Providing ongoing support for students to improve speaking skills
  • Implementing mechanisms to evaluate spoken English for students whose speaking scores on standardized tests do not meet the program requirements
  • Building relationships with resource partners across campus
  • Programming and administering (including budgeting) all aspects of the ITA Program
  • Recruiting and training instructional support staff


Anticipating and identifying forward-looking best practices in developing the language and cultural skills of international teaching assistants

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.

Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences
  • Experience in training teachers to recognize issues arising from intercultural communication required;
  • Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics with emphasis in second language acquisition or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) required;
  • Experience traveling and/or living abroad, and learning a foreign language with experience communicating solely in that language highly desired;
  • Teaching experience in a higher education setting preferred.
  • Experience teaching English to speakers of other languages;
