Job Description

The Practice Support Services Department of Arnold & Porter has an International Arbitration Sr. Legal Assistant (Paralegal) opening in the Washington, DC office. The International Arbitration Sr. Legal Assistant (Paralegal) provides high level legal assistant support under direct supervision of attorneys on various client and firm matters.
Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing client case presentations and hearing materials.
  • Attending hearings for production of witness & expert binders, exhibits, and demonstratives.
  • Preparing deposition files, and assisting with preparation and filing of briefs.
  • Conducting research using various resources including databases and the internet.
  • Researching case authorities and background material for attorney review.
  • Developing case tasks and assignments with attorney approval.
  • Performing a full range of paralegal tasks from case inception through discovery process, trial, post-trial proceedings, and case closure.
  • Arranging for case logistics, copy requests, and document organization.
  • Assisting with organizing case documents, compiling case materials, and working with attorneys during a written phase and hearings.
  • Researching and monitoring current and developing cases.
  • Assisting at hearings (tech support, hot seat presentation, and direct/cross examination preparations).
  • Managing assigned cases and their related tasks and projects.
  • Distributing case materials, documents, and research materials requested by attorneys.
  • Cite checking, researching authorities, and preparing legal exhibits for arbitration submissions and court papers.
  • Establishing and maintaining case files, document collections and chronologies.
  • Assisting with document collection and profiling for attorney review.
  • Training project legal assistants and overseeing case-specific tasks of entry-level staff members (along with the supervision/management of project legal assistants at hearings).
  • Working on business development proposals, professional development submissions.
  • Conducting computer searches, research and case management functions on client databases or firm resources such as Trial Director, Opus 2 Magnum, Relativity, Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw, the Internet.
  • Setting up new case databases and writing templates.
  • Providing attorneys with general organizational support and other administrative duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Highly detail-oriented, including the ability to assess and respond to underlying detail issues and implications.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, a commitment to professionalism, integrity, and collegiality.
  • Ability to supervise legal assistants and legal assistant clerks.
  • Experience with electronic filing (CM/ECF registration) and PACER.
  • Proven ability to multi-task and set priorities while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with Relativity, Clearwell; Opus 2 Magnum; Lexis/Nexis, and other case management and eDiscovery tools.
  • Flexibility to work overtime as necessary, including nights and weekends and travel, as necessary.
  • Excellent academic record.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Superior organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage a large workload efficiently and effectively.
  • Proficiency in Spanish preferred.
  • Exceptional problem solving skills, critical thinking abilities and the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Minimum of three years of legal assistant experience.
  • Four-year college degree strongly preferred.
