Department Information
Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.
Job Summary
- Reports hazardous findings to appropriate personnel, recommends and implements corrective actions, and conducts follow-up activities to ensure control measures are effective.
- Develops and revises occupational safety programs, policies, procedures, and training for the university.
- Performs a variety of occupational safety and industrial hygiene tasks including, but not limited to, ergonomic evaluations, odor response, indoor air quality evaluations, field work, fit testing, meetings and presentations, exposure assessments, safety program and policy development, training development and presentation, technical writing, using a calibrating monitoring equipment, and other safety related administrative activities.
- Develops and provides training as needed regarding environmental health and safety information.
- Conducts exposure assessments, interprets regulations and toxicological properties of chemicals, develops sampling strategies to evaluate exposure, and compares results to established legal allowable limits.
- Provides technical consultation to university and non-university parties as requested.
- Leads and serves as a subject matter expert on occupational safety and industrial hygiene initiatives.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree preferably in industrial hygiene, occupational safety, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 5 years of industrial hygiene, occupational safety, or related experience
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- Other: CIH - Certified Industrial Hygienist upon date of hire
- Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
Preferred
- CSP - Certified Safety Professional upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
