Yakima Valley College is accepting applications for the position of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioner Technician (HVAC Technician). This is a full-time, permanent, classified position; beginning salary is $4,541 per month for 40 hours per week, with periodic increments up to $5,535, plus a full state benefits package.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Facility Operations, the HVAC Technician is responsible for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment (HVAC) systems for assigned locations which include the performance of skilled work in diagnostic testing, repair, and maintenance of HVAC and steam distribution systems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Journey-level standing as refrigeration mechanic or steamfitter as attested by:
- Completion of recognized apprenticeship in refrigeration or steamfitter trades
- Full journey-level status in Plumbers and Pipefitters Union
- Five years of applicable experience in the refrigeration or steamfitter trades or a combination of the two. Vocational or trade school training as a steamfitter or refrigeration mechanic will substitute, year for year, for work experience up to a maximum of two years
- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A valid EPA refrigerant handling permit
- Experience working in an educational setting
- A valid Washington State low voltage electrical license
Essential Tasks:
- Maintains and repairs commercial refrigeration equipment used in air conditioning, ventilation, and chilled water systems Inspects, maintains, and repairs plumbing, heating, water, cooling, refrigeration
- Monitors and adjusts heat and air conditioning in buildings using automated building monitoring and control systems
- Performs other work as required
- May direct the work of others
- Reads and interprets blueprints
- Installation, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of air handlers, air flow dampers, V belts, sheaves pulleys, and bearings
- Operates and maintains fluid and electronic testing and measuring instruments, such as manometers, air flow and liquid flow meters, volt meters, ammeters and potentiometers
- Analyzes and maintains control systems that include electrical, electronic, and pneumatic sensors and actuators; lay out, fabricate
- Estimates and orders materials and supplies needed to maintain equipment in good working condition.
- Prepares surfaces for welding; uses arc or acetylene welding and burning equipment
- Keeps records of work performed and supplies used; use such tools as drill presses, grinders, bandsaws, hand drills, testers, welding equipment, soldering guns, small hand tools and specialized apparatus
- Install mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic temperature and humidity controls for heating and ventilation systems Repair relays, timers, meters, and switches with local or remote computer control
ABILITY TO:
- Use all types of hand and power tools Understand and follow oral and written directions
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
- Read, interpret, and update blueprints
- Direct the work of others
- Use automated building monitoring and control systems, estimate time and materials
- Use arc and gas welding equipment
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Occupational hazards and safety practices of HVAC trade Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies
- Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in mechanical trades and HVAC work Principles of operation of HVAC systems

Paid Leave and Other Incentives
