Job Description

JOB PURPOSE: Learn about the education and preparation needed to become an apprentice. This position evaluates compatibility, desire, mechanical aptitude and potential learning abilities to be successful in the technician craft at the District. Provide labor support in accordance with District safety guidelines, policies and procedures while demonstrating the skills and abilities to become a Technician Apprentice. This position will report to the Central Maintenance Tech Shop Superintendent

JOB FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the job satisfactorily.

# % of Time Job Functions

50% Provide labor support for projects within the Technician work force and demonstrate aptitude and ability to become a Technician Apprentice.

30% Perform installation, maintenance, and alignment with satisfactory completion of tasks under the supervision of a Superintendent, Technician, or Foreman Technician.

20% Operate the technical tools and equipment used within the Tech Shop to successfully accomplish the work assigned.

Ongoing Drive a motorized vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the District.

Ongoing Maintain regular and predictable attendance. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Comply with District policies. Complete all required training. Maintain a working knowledge and comply with District safety procedures and specific safety requirements of this position, and those in accordance with applicable provisions of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC).

QUALIFICATIONS: The qualifications listed below are representative of those required, but reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Post-Secondary Education:
No higher-level education required. Two years college or technical school with an emphasis on mathematics, physics, computers, electronics, automation, or comparable work history demonstrating electronic skills is preferred.

Experience: Requires six (6) months work history demonstrating technical aptitude. Demonstrated experience with electrical equipment or electronic components preferred. Experience with industrial or utility control or automation preferred.

Specific KSA's: A fully skilled incumbent will have the following specific knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Requires the ability and desire to train through the apprenticeship program.
  • Ability to problem solve under a variety of conditions
  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations, including algebra, and ability to perform these calculations.
  • Requires good interpersonal skills, ability to get along with others and ability to follow directions.
  • Must possess or obtain within six (6) months from hire date, First Aid and CPR certifications.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. Must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Complexity: Completes standard, routine tasks of limited scope. Applies technical knowledge and skills to tasks.

Decision Making: Follows established procedures and priorities. Escalates problems or issues to supervisor.

Computers & Equipment: A fully skilled incumbent will have the ability to utilize the following software, hardware, or equipment: To perform this job successfully, an individual is required to have knowledge of PeopleSoft Timekeeping/HR; Microsoft Outlook; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Word; Maximo Asset Management; General Office Equipment; Power Equipment (drill, saber saw, reciprocating saw, grinder, etc.); Hand tools (screwdriver, wrench, pliers, soldering iron, etc.); electronics test equipment and vehicle operation.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
