Job Description

In support of Gift of Life Michigans (GOLMs) mission, vision and core values, the employee is professional, determined and compassionate. The Hospital & External Partner Donation Advocate (HEPDA) is responsible for creating an environment which helps facilitate organ and tissue recovery by providing necessary resources and information to our customers and partners. Partners include medical examiner offices (MEOs), funeral homes (FH), EMS offices (EMS), and regional Medical Control Authorities (MCAs).

Essential Job Functions:

  • Understand that hospital and partner presence is vital to GOLMs core purpose and includes daily response to referrals and providing education.
  • Develop and implement customized strategic plans for targeted hospitals and partners.
  • Conduct timely referral and donor follow-up to assigned areas.
  • Develop and enhance relationships and donation processes with hospitals and other key partners.
  • Establish relationships with key physicians, hospital personnel, MEOs, FHs, EMS and MCAs.
  • Manage active organ and tissue referrals from assigned hospitals and partners.
  • Maintain accurate documentation according to department policies.
  • Respond in a timely manner to all customer and partner requests for service regarding organ and tissue donation.
  • Work with assigned areas to maximize organ and tissue donation.
  • Seek and implement quality improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain awareness of current healthcare literature concerning organ and tissue donation.
  • Communicate information to GOLM staff regarding post referral/recovery feedback and overall donor status from hospitals and partners.
  • Stays current and involved in local, regional and national collaborative opportunities for the organ and tissue procurement community.

  • Ability to immediately respond to referrals and other situations, occurring during standard and alternate hours, requiring in-person presence and expertise.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with hospital systems, medical examiner offices, funeral home, MCAs and EMS office structure.
  • Have firsthand knowledge of organ and tissue recovery practices to a level that they can be effectively communicated to hospital personnel and partners.
  • A bachelors degree in a field related to the essential duties of the position, including but not limited to healthcare related (biology, exercise science), marketing, communications, and business development. A Funeral Director license preferred. A background in forensics or medical examiner investigation is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish relationships and work diplomatically with key stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • At least 1 year work experience in a hospital or similar setting; two or more years experience, including ICU or other critical care setting or other relevant professional experience is preferred.
