Position Information:
Performs health education assignments.

Classification Standards:

Positions allocable to this class typically function under the administrative and technical supervision of a Health Educator or Senior Health Educator or other appropriate higher-level staff. Health Education Assistants conduct health oriented education activities designed to educate individuals to take the necessary steps for the preservation of their own health and safety. Such activities include conducting surveys and investigations to determine health education problems or needs, writing and disseminating flyers, and conducting health education classes for clients and the public. These positions are used both in Service Planning Areas (SPA) or County-wide programs and are trained to function without detailed instructions; however, they are expected to seek guidance and direction from supervisors in unfamiliar situations.

Essential Job Functions

Conducts health education classes for clients by lecturing on and discussing various health topics including but not limited to child safety, personal hygiene, laboratory services and how to use the pharmacy.

Conducts surveys and investigations through questionnaires and available census or other statistical data to determine the level of income, housing and education of SPA residents.

Writes flyers for dissemination; speaks to groups on health related topics; arranges for special speakers and participates in health education activities as needed.

Administers pre and post tests to health education program participants in order to determine the effectiveness of educational methods and material presented and assembles these and program data such as clinic attendance for review and analysis by Health Educators, Senior Health Educators or appropriate staff.

Contacts community organizations, public and private agencies and professional groups to elicit their cooperation and participation in community health programs.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements
Option I:
Two years of experience in the coordination, planning, or implementation of a health related program.

OR
Option II:
Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in health education.

License:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Physical Class:
2 - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
Special Requirement Information:
  • Experience is evaluated on the basis of a verifiable 40-hour work week.

  • Health related programs such as but not limited to: nutrition education, maternal and child health, violence prevention, community health worker/promotora, environmental health/environmental justice, diabetes prevention/education, smoking cessation education, or STD/HIV prevention.
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for equivalency to United States accredited institutions standards by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or The Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). (see Employment Information under Accreditation Information)
  • In order to receive credit for any type of college or university degree, such as a Bachelor's Degree or higher, you must attach a legible copy of the Official Diploma, Official Transcripts, or Official Letter from the accredited institution, which shows the area of specialization and the date the degree was awarded, with Registrar's signature and school seal, to the application.
    • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for equivalency to United States accredited institutions standards by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or The Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. Desirable Qualifications:
Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
  • Work experience preparing or assisting in gathering and preparing information for various reports, correspondence or presentations.
  • Experience working with the public or with community groups interviewing clients or patients concerning health or social service matters, answering questions, and providing information about health, mental health, and social services to clients or patients.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Access, or PowerPoint or similar applications.

Examination Content:


Once we have determined that you meet our Minimum Requirements the examination process will consist of an evaluation of experience based on application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire information submitted at the time of filing weighted 100%.

Applicants must meet the Minimum Requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination (evaluation of experience) to be added to the Eligible Register (hiring list).
Passing this examination and being added to the Eligible Register does not guarantee an offer of employment.
Eligibility Information:
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
