Job Description
As the Global Head, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Investment Leader Relationships for State Street, you will be responsible for leading and executing the ESG priorities, in support of our purpose to help create better outcomes for the world’s investors and the people they serve, and our broader responsibilities as a prominent Globally Systemic Important Bank (G-SIB). The role will also interface with some of our most sophisticated clients, including chief investment officers, on matter related to ESG as well as adjacent topics including how State Street can support their operating model objectives.


While the role has been posted as being Boston based, we are open and willing to consider candidates who are based in other North American locations or in EMEA locations as long as it aligns with the global footprint strategy.


Key Accountabilities
  • Provide expert input to State Street’s international businesses as they consider regulatory and client developments
  • Strategy:
  • Oversee team who maintains strong governance of ESG priorities and metrics in order to meet stakeholder expectations and regulatory compliance
  • Ensure State Street is fully leveraging the ESG capabilities of all its business with SSGA taking the leading role as a fiduciary and research excellence from State Street Associates (SSA)
  • Advise senior leaders with respect to our longer term ESG product and program strategies; advise and oversee the recommendations on products and services following results of the civil rights audit
  • Product:
  • Partner with the Product organization to coordinate and encourage the development of profitable products in the ESG area for our clients
  • Engage with clients, media, and other external stakeholders; operate as State Street’s most senior, ESG spokesperson; chair ESG Board of Advisors
  • Communication & Content:
  • Deliver value to asset owners by delivering thought leadership, insight and consulting on the application and reporting of ESG in complex portfolios
  • Curate and expand external network of partnerships to enhance the standing of State Street as an ESG leader amongst its stakeholders including clients and investors
  • Represent investment thought leadership content in various forums as warranted- in person delivery, as well as written - client advisory boards, client events, social media and other
  • Continue to develop ESG thought leadership working across State Street globally including SSA, Product, and in coordination with Global Marketing
  • Build relationships with and develop service offering for Chief Investment Officers at State Street’s Investment Services clients through a combination of packaging and delivering relevant investment-related thought leadership topics and consulting around investment organisation and process opportunities connected to Alpha, CRD implementations as well as commercial positioning of relevant State Street products/platforms: Alpha, SSA, Trading
  • Client Coverage:
  • Institutionalize how to engage programmatically and in a differentiated way with our CIO clients to deepen relationships, improve client NPS, and operate as a point of escalation
  • Reporting:
  • Provide dual management wherever necessary in order to exert leadership influence over local ESG staff
  • Manage the collection and dissemination of information about State Street’s ESG position, including periodic, mandatory, and voluntary disclosures such as the ESG annual report, CSRD (Europe), and RFP responses
  • Legal Entity Regulatory Compliance:
  • Provide co-ordination and assistance to the legal entity leaders in their ESG regulatory compliance work, in order to maximize effectiveness of data management and subject matter expertise


Candidate Specification: Key Selection Criteria
  • Experience working in a large, complex organization with multiple legal entity structures and business lines
  • Critical competencies for success:
  • Experience in establishing governance frameworks, policies, and controls
  • Demonstrated track record of achievement with respect to driving sustainable and scalable change
  • Significant knowledge of sustainability and other ESG matters that are material for large financial services businesses
  • Excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Leadership and advisory skills
  • Significant background in climate risk management, preferably in the financial services industry, including experience in understanding and identifying climate related risks and opportunities
  • Contemporary knowledge of risk, control and governance including knowledge/appreciation of the global regulatory landscape and our regulatory posture
  • Executive stakeholder management capabilities including establishing trust and respect of clients, investors, and regulators in particular
  • Ability to manage projects across multiple stakeholders, timelines, and key deliverables
  • Execution/project management skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience in collaborating with and building networks across a wide range of stakeholders, both internal and external, including policymakers, industry bodies, and peers
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • 20+ years’ experience in the financial services industry, specifically working with clients in the institutional investment management and/or servicing segment
  • Sound judgment and collaborative style


Salary Range


$300,000 - $412,500 Annual
