Job Description
The College of Education and Scanlan Center for School Mental Health at the University of Iowa is looking to fill a Group Coordinator position. Looking for an Individual with a social work background who has experience providing high-quality case management and service coordination. The successful applicant will be expected to work in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Services and Assistant Director of Clinical Services and Crisis Response to coordinate group counseling services. The primary responsibilities include managing group counseling coordination (including group referrals, waitlists, and service agreements), providing triage and clinical intake, providing statewide resource and referral connection, conducting risk assessments, and supporting post-crisis response in school settings. Additional responsibilities may include brief psychosocial counseling in-person and via telehealth and contributing to the training and supervision of practicum students. For applicants with a LMSW, there may also be an opportunity for clinical supervision toward LISW credentials. An in-house multidisciplinary clinic will be staffed by licensed professionals and practicum students. The Group Coordinator will work closely with a collaborative clinical team and other Center staff on the implementation, delivery, optimization, and evaluation of mental health services for school-age populations and school staff.


Position: Full-Time, specified term position through 9/30/2024. May be eligible for renewal.


Specific Job Duties And Tasks


  • Deliver high quality mental health services to students and educators.
  • Conduct intake interviews and triage clients referred to the SCSMH Clinic.
  • Collaborate with the Resource and Referral and Intake Coordinators to facilitate a seamless continuum of care through the SCSMH Clinic.
  • Work with Assistant Director of Clinical Services to evaluate client care on an on-going basis.
  • Contribute to practicum student training and supervision.
  • Assist in the delivery of evidence-based crisis intervention services in schools.
  • Provide planned and emergent mental health assessment and consultation for individuals with a wide range of behavioral health concerns seeking services through the SCSMH.
  • Work with group leaders to coordinate group counseling services including screening, recruitment, referral/waitlist management, and service agreements.

About The Scanlan Center For School Mental Health


The Scanlan Center for School Mental Health is a partnership between the University of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Education with initial funding of $20 million to address mental health needs in Iowa schools. The Center will expand support for mental health prevention and treatment to Pre-K-12 students and educators in schools across the state. This includes training, resources, and outreach to support student mental health so all students, educators, and schools can be successful and resilient. Located in the UI College of Education, the center bridges disciplines across campus to provide a network of expertise in education, public health, nursing, psychology, psychiatry, social work, and counseling that improves mental health outcomes. This is Iowa's first state-wide center supporting mental health in our schools.


Education Requirement


  • Prospective candidates must have earned a bachelor’s degree in social work. Typical experience 6 months to one year and may include experience gained while working on a BSW, such as through practicum experience.


Required Qualifications


  • Evidence of strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
  • Experience providing social work services with diverse populations.
  • Experience in risk assessment.
  • A valid driver’s license is required, as is continued compliance with the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standards (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V, Chapter 19).
  • Knowledge of mandatory reporting statutes and processes in the state of Iowa.
  • Experience with care coordination and resource and referral connection.


Desired Qualifications


  • Experience with specific mental health populations, including depression, suicidality, anxiety, trauma, and substance use.
  • Master’s degree in social work.
  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care.
  • If practicing at the master’s level, must be licensed to practice in the state of Iowa (e.g., LMSW).
  • Training and experience in risk assessment and crisis response.
  • Experience working directly with the K-12 education system.
  • Knowledge and experience in navigating complex systems (e.g., mental health systems, school systems, etc.).
  • Experience in building and maintaining relationships with referral sources, families, local communities, and other stakeholders.
