Job Summary


The Historic Sites Groundskeeper II is a part time position working to maintain the museum systems’ historical properties including mowing, weeding, watering, snow removal, garden work and debris clean-up. The incumbent performs general upkeep and cleaning of museum grounds, checks irrigation system weekly for proper function and coverage, and performs landscape maintenance including mowing, watering, garden planning, planting, pruning, and weed control. This position will also be expected to assist in the set-up/break-down of events and support the educational mission of the museum system. This role operates a variety of motorized equipment, hand and power tools. This position will work approximately 29 hours a week during the growing season and 11 hours a week over late fall, winter, and early spring, and reports to the Curator of Historic Sites. Primary location: Centennial Village, with other work at Meeker Home Museum and White Plumb Farm Learning Center.
  • Typical Schedule Examples:
  • October-March: 11 hours per week (Thursday 7am-Noon, Friday 7am-1pm, On-call for snow events).
  • April-September: 29 hours per week (Wednesday-Saturday 7am-2:30pm)


Experience, Knowledge, Skills


  • Demonstrated good personal and electronic communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of garden layout, design, propagation, and instillation techniques of horticultural features and other related activities.
  • Familiarity with personal computers and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Maintenance and repair activities including basic knowledge of landscape practices (mowing, trimming, pruning, etc), irrigation systems, special garden features, and basic equipment troubleshooting and repair.
  • Two+ (2) years of related experience in grounds maintenance.


Essential Functions


  • Follow established safety policy and practices at all times.
  • Work independently as well as with others.
  • Set-up & take-down for festivals and other events.
  • Handle difficult situations using tact, patience and good judgment.
  • Perform strenuous labor in all types of weather.
  • Operate equipment such as power tools, shop equipment, riding mowers, snow blowers, UTVs, and small tractors.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems and controls.
  • Assist in the planning, planting, maintenance of, and winterization of a variety of garden beds.
  • Care for tools and equipment, clean shop and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Apply pesticides, weed killer and other chemical agents following best practices and safety protocols.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the general public.
  • Follow written and /or verbal instructions and communicate information to others.
  • Practice and understand safe work methods.


Work Environment And Physical Requirements


  • Ability to lift arm above shoulder level and to move objects.
  • Work a variable schedule including early mornings, weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
  • Vision enough to perform above functions and to read printed instructions.
  • Incumbent will be exposed to loud amplified sound equipment while working grounds.
  • Exposure to vegetation that can cause punctures, biting insects, wildlife, off-leash dogs.
  • Manual labor, prolonged standing, kneeling, bending and walking, climbing ladders and stairs.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.
  • Mix and use chemicals for weed and grass control following label and local regulations.
  • Manual dexterity enough to operate hand and power tools.
  • Long periods of time involved in planting, hand weeding and maintaining grounds using a shovel, rake and other tools.
  • Work on a variety of outdoor sites in significant heat, cold, rain, snow, and other adverse weather conditions.
  • Spend extended amounts of time operating grounds equipment - i.e. poly cord trimmers, mowers, & a multitude of other equipment.
