Level I $13.65 - $14.75 hourly


Level II $15.00 - $17.28 hourly


Job Summary


The Groundskeeper ensures Island Grove Park and Arena facilities are maintained and standards are met regarding the maintenance of park amenities, and overall curb appeal of the City of Greeley. This individual will work with a diverse team on park and facility maintenance, projects and event maintenance including events like the Greeley Stampede, the Weld County Fair and large dog shows.


The Groundskeeper role is a hands-on, hardworking individual who will deal with a large number public and private events. The City relies on the Groundskeeper to follow safety protocols, while being responsive, thorough, and resourceful go-getter with a customer focused mindset.


Scheduling for this position varies and may include working evenings, weekends, and holidays, as followed by State and Federal law.


Essential Functions


Level I


  • Assist in proper loading and securement of equipment in the field;
  • Ability to see and maneuver around obstacles in the path of travel during mowing operations;
  • Ability to clean and maintain mowing equipment;
  • Perform other mowing duties as assigned.
  • Ability and license to drive full size city vehicles on public roadways;
  • Ability to safely operate riding mower equipment up to 6’ wide;


Level II


  • Perform other mowing duties as assigned.
  • Assist in proper loading and securement of equipment in the field;
  • Ability and license to drive full size city vehicles on public roadways;
  • Operate large area turf mowers from 72” wide to 16’ wide, including preventative daily maintenance and upkeep of equipment;
  • Maintain all of the responsibilities for Levels I;


Essential Functions


Level I


  • Clean and remove debris from shelters and turf areas;
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends for special events such as Greeley Blues Jam, Stampede, The Weld County Fair as well as National, Regional and local Dog Shows;
  • Clean and stock restrooms daily;
  • Able to operate small equipment such as weed eater, edger and backpack blower;
  • General park, turf and Event maintenance;
  • Assist with repairs and maintenance of playgrounds, shelters;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Plant and prune forestry-related or horticultural maintenance;
  • Perform other duties as assigned;
  • Empty trash receptacles regularly throughout assigned areas;
  • Perform hand watering and simple water valve operation for lawns and landscape beds;
  • Clean and maintain Right of Way medians and tree lawns;
  • Pull weeds in landscape beds;


Level II


  • Perform more technical irrigation work to include mainline, lateral repair, system redesign, and valve replacements;
  • Perform basic irrigation tasks, including routine sprinkler tests, hand watering, sprinkler clock and zone adjustments;
  • Assist in proper loading and securement of equipment in the field;
  • Repair and maintenance of picnic tables and split rail fencing;
  • Must be able to work nights and weekend for special events such as Greeley Blues Jam, Stampede, The Weld County Fair as well as National, Regional and local Dog Shows;
  • Maintenance of outdoor facilities for reservations;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Apply fertilizer, pesticide, and insecticide chemical applications using manual and ride-on spreaders, hand held and backpack sprayers;
  • Perform other duties as assigned;
  • General knowledge of carpentry, basic plumbing and electrical;
  • Able to operate riding mower and heavy equipment such as skid steer and loader;
  • Assist with herbicide application and other more technical weed management tasks;
  • Must be able to perform all duties of grounds keeper level 1;


Work Environment And Physical Requirements


  • Incumbent may be exposed to loud amplified sound equipment while working arena show grounds;
  • Manual dexterity enough to operate hand and power tools;
  • Handle difficult situations using tact, patience and good judgment;
  • Work outside with exposure to all weather elements;
  • Vision enough to perform above functions and to read printed instructions;
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and general public;
  • Mix and use chemicals for weed and grass control following label and local regulations;
  • Hours may be flexible depending on assigned area, 32-40 hours per wk. Primarily M-F 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., with weekends and holidays as assigned;
  • Exposure to high traffic areas in medians and right-or-ways;
  • Long periods of time involved in planting, hand weeding and maintaining grounds using a shovel, rake and other tools;
  • Extended hours operating grounds equipment - i.e. poly cord trimmers, mowers, & a multitude of other equipment;
  • Manual labor, prolonged standing, kneeling, bending and walking, climbing ladders and stairs;
  • Follow workplace safety rules at all times;
  • Ability to lift arm above shoulder level and to move objects;
  • Exposure to homeless/transient individuals and camps which may pose biohazard risks.
  • Exposure to vegetation that can cause punctures, biting insects, wildlife, off-leash dogs;
