College of The Albemarle, located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, is the state's first community college, founded in 1961. Through our four locations, we provide quality college transfer and career and technical education to residents in northeast North Carolina.


FLSA: Creative Professional - Exempt

The role of the Graphic Designer/Webmaster is to prepare the layout and design for all college print and digital media, as well as to create and manage content for existing and new web pages. This team-oriented person will be responsible for all design and functionality for the website, ensuring brand standards are maintained at all times. The Graphic Designer/Webmaster is also responsible for ensuring the website is responsive on all devices and works to maximize functionality. In addition, this person will be responsible for ensuring all digital assets of the college meet Section 508 Accessibility standards.

The Graphic Designer/Webmaster will receive supervision from the Director, Communications and Marketing.

Examples of Duties

Graphic Design, Multimedia Design and Marketing:

  • Produce all materials printed/created in the on-site print shop.
  • Create custom fillable forms for print and web in Adobe Acrobat Professional.
  • Understand the fundamentals and best practices of internet marketing.
  • Maintain an archive of marketing materials.
  • Take and edit college photographs and maintain a photo archive.
  • Write, edit and proofread content for existing and new web pages.
  • Maintain and update specifications for printing services as well as for production and distribution services for college-wide publications.
  • Obtain competitive bids and coordinate all outside printing.
  • Distribute public service announcements and press releases to the website promptly.
  • Edit, add captions to, transcribe and share videos.
  • Monitor and ensure branding standards are maintained across the college.
  • Assist with the college's advertising and marketing campaigns, special events and other projects as needed.
  • Maintain in-house style guide based on the Associated Press Stylebook and revise web content accordingly.
  • Establish college-wide style standards for the web.
  • Edit and post messages to the electronic marquee.
  • Develop and maintain a photo resource folder for all college employees' use.
  • Produce digital files for printing and publications

Website Development, Server Maintenance, and Content Management:

  • Work with a cross-departmental team, maintain and develop the master content calendar for all web properties.
  • Create, develop and manage content for the college's web presence (requires working with content management software).
  • Troubleshoot responsive design elements and functionality when needed.
  • Understand and maximize on-page Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
  • Perform regular usability tests across multiple browser/operating system combinations and make changes as necessary to maximize functionality and user experience.
  • Maintain or improve web page load speeds.
  • Work closely with Management Information Services (MIS) to keep site downtime to a minimum.
  • Extensive file management on the server.
  • Understand and implement information architecture.
  • Oversee website backup restores when needed.
  • Monitor all web analytics and make adjustments as needed to ensure performance and maximize the user experience.
  • Keep current with emerging web technologies.
  • Coordinate web projects across departments.
  • Understand W3C standards and best practices, apply to all content and design across aspects of the website.
  • Update and install third-party plugins (i.e. NetPrice Calculator and Gainful Employment Disclosures) to ensure continuous functionality.
  • Understand and apply Section 508 (Accessibility) standards to all content and design across aspects of the website.
  • Maintain a consistent look and feel throughout all web properties.
  • Update WorkPress versions, themes and plugins for both the main site and microsite.
  • Create or redesign WordPress child-theme templates as needed.
  • Manage Google Business and Bing Places listings for all college entities.
  • Copy, edit and proofread all web content.
  • Update links to third party databases (i.e. Library resources).
  • Manage development and ongoing maintenance of all aspects of the college's website.
  • Assure web-based information is archived for future needs and reference.

Other Duties:

  • Participate actively in Inclement Weather procedures when needed.
  • Accurately and completely maintain a marketing tracking spreadsheet system.
  • Shoot photographs of campus events
  • Work cooperatively with key team members and departments.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director, Communications and Marketing.
  • Support the Office of Communications and Marketing as needed in the event of a college emergency.

Typical Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Web Design and/or Development, Information Technology, Business Management Information Systems, Graphic Design, Communications, Journalism, Technical Writing, or closely related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in graphic design/desktop publishing, advertising/marketing, printing/design.
  • Minimum of three years of experience managing content and production for high traffic websites.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of print shop equipment, including digital press, paper guillotine, comb binder, saddle stitcher, folding machine, etc.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Premier Pro, After Effects and Microsoft Office.
  • Principles and practices of PC operating system to design and create both print and electronic publications.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Javascript, Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and experience with WordPress and other content management systems.

Skills:

  • Significant skills in digital photography.

Ability to:

  • Prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Communicate with respect by tactfully responding to requests from faculty, staff and community members.
  • Proven ability to build consensus and work effectively within a cross-departmental team.
  • Take initiative and work independently when necessary.
  • Represent the college in a professional manner.
