Job Description

This position is located in the Department of Global Communications (DGC), Outreach Division (OD), Knowledge Solutions and Design Section (KSD). This Section specializes in web solutions, internal communications, branding and graphic design. It consists of three components: the Graphic Design Unit (GDU) which provides graphic design and branding solutions for United Nations global communications campaigns and publications; the Web Group, which provides web development and knowledge solutions for all OD sections, and the UN Intranet-iSeek Team which provides internal communications service in English and French to UN staff through iSeek and information for Permanent Missions through e-deleGATE. The incumbent reports to the Team Leader of the Graphic Design Unit (GDU).

Responsibilities
Within limits of delegated authority, the Graphic Design Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
  • In consultation with relevant staff/units, assists in the planning, design, production, and scheduling of graphic material; assists in providing technical support in electronic formats for the design, layout, and make-up of various communications products, using relevant computer operating systems, software and platforms.
  • Determines specifications for electronic and print products including document size, colors, etc.; provides support throughout the production process and ensure that projects are on schedule.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of a storage and retrieval system for artwork and design files (e.g. design concepts, computer files, fonts, color specifications, photographs and illustrations files, etc.).
  • Participates in initial meetings with clients to discuss graphic design projects; gathers information for substantive content, communication objectives, technical specifications and schedules/deadlines.; creates graphics develops multiple design proposals for review by clients, which may include photographic, illustrative or graphic solutions; manipulates this material prior to preparation of final proofs.
  • Performs other related work as required.
  • Assists in the design, layout and preparation of information materials, including production of electronically published products for public information campaigns, conferences and publications; in consultation with authors and other relevant staff, establishes graphic design requirements to meet communications objectives; prepares submission schedules for various communications products (e.g. logos, publications, booklets, brochures, banners, social media graphics, posters, newsletters, pamphlets and other material).

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of work experience in graphic design, publication design, and social media graphics is required.
Experience in Adobe Creative Cloud software including InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop is required.
Experience in the UN system or a comparable international organization is desirable.
Experience with designing for global campaigns, publications and events is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include portfolio submission of the latest design work which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice
• This position is temporarily available until 31 July 2023 with possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
  • While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

  • Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test [in English] at the United Nations headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International criminal tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST.

  • This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
