Methodist University Golf Course is an 18-hole laboratory for Professional Golf Management students attending Methodist University. The PGA-accredited program trains students to become PGA professionals while earning a 4-year business degree. The golf course laboratory is an integral part of the program as students must use the facility to improve their golfing abilities while in school. The golf course also hosts PGA Playing Ability Tests, student tournaments, NCAA golf tournaments, and golf seminars.
The superintendent will be responsible for providing playing conditions that meet the requirements for the PGM program. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to management of:
- Staff of the golf course
- Departmental budget creation, implementation, purchasing.
- Fleet of mowing and maintenance equipment
- 18 holes and practice areas established with hybrid and common Bermuda grasses, many of which are overseeded in the winter
- Automatic irrigation systems
The superintendent will report to the Chief of Staff and VP of Planning and Administration. Additionally, the superintendent will be expected to work with the PGM staff to determine acceptable levels of conditioning and use of the golf course.
Qualifications
A qualified candidate should possess a two- or four-year advanced degree, preferably in turf grass management; experience as a golf course superintendent or assistant superintendent; a NC pesticide applicator’s license or ability to attain one, and a valid NC driver’s license.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Properly care for assigned areas and equipment.
- Lift/move heavy equipment and objects as needed.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Bend, kneel, lift, and shovel.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Properly use and care for hand and power tools.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
