Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTION:

Come apply your education and experience in the geophysical sciences at Florida's Atlantic Coast a short drive south of Kennedy Space Center and historic Cocoa Beach. Join Kegman's team of scientists and engineers who support our nation's nuclear deterrence and treaty monitoring mission at The Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC). AFTAC uses scientific means to obtain and evaluate technical data on nuclear treaty monitoring to validate compliance of signatory foreign government nations. This is accomplished by deploying subsurface sensors around the world and developing advanced proliferation detection technologies all aimed at preserving our nation’s security. For this job, the Geophysical Scientist provides expertise in research as well as calibration for event discrimination by applying seismology, infrasound, and hydro-acoustic sciences and methodologies. This work supports the United States (US) Atomic Energy Detection System (USAEDS) and US National Data Center (USNDC) used in monitoring compliance with nuclear test ban treaties.

The Geophysical Scientist provides expertise in research and calibration for event discrimination by applying seismology, infrasound, and hydro-acoustic sciences and methodologies. This job requires a fully adjudicated (not interim) U.S. Government-issued security clearance, and therefore requires the applicant to be a U.S. citizen. This job has no remote work opportunity.

The responsibility and skills for this position are as follows:

Responsibilities

  • Answer rapid-response, highly applied research questions related to individual special-interest or alert events.
  • Calibrate discriminants.
  • Examine data/model biases.
  • Perform regional moment sensor analysis and coda magnitude analysis for estimating moment magnitude using regional stations.
  • Build events using Analyst Review Station (ARS)
  • Investigate ways to reduce scatter in residuals between observed and predicted regional amplitudes.
  • Perform spectral ratios between special events using portable and US NDC stations, apply spectral ratios and single event spectra of explosions to model estimated depth of burial and yield.
  • Incorporate new discriminants into an operational discriminant model.
  • Conduct discriminant investigation.
  • Compile reference data sets.
  • Determine data corrections.
  • Produce potential regional P-Wave magnitude scales.
  • Develop generalized event discrimination methodologies to support the AFTAC geophysical mission.

Skills

  • Proficient in Python and SQL.
  • Computer, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Demonstrate proficiency using Microsoft Office 365 products including [Excel, Power Point and Word].
  • Familiar with data acquisition formats, including: Conference on Disarmaments (CD) 1.1, Center for Seismic Studies (CSS), Standard for Exchange of Earthquake Data (SEED), mini-SEED, Society for Exploration Geophysics (SEG)-Y, Seismic Analysis Code (SAC),
  • Documented technical expertise in seismic, hydroacoustic, and infrasonic systems research and required documentation for program execution.
  • Documented expertise in geology, regional seismic analysis and seismic event screening to produce bulletins and/or reports and to test new analysis tools.
  • Display strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and written/oral communication skills.
  • Communicate effectively with company executives and employees, in writings and verbally; must be comfortable speaking clearly, effectively, and confidently.
  • Able to multi-task and work with a diverse work group of vendors, executive managers, subcontractors, consultants, and other professionals.
  • Documented expertise in noise data analyses and calibration analyses.
  • Detail-oriented team leader who can consistently meet deadlines and work independently as needed.
