Job Description
The Geologist Technician Will Contribute to the mission of IIHR–Hydroscience and Engineering and the Iowa Geological Survey by participating in the collection, management, analysis, and dissemination of information describing the geologic and groundwater resources of Iowa.


On Campus: This position is performed on campus. This is a 1 year specified term position with possibility of renewal.


Specific Job Duties And Tasks


  • Track and maintain chemical supplies. Coordinate equipment repairs and maintenance for the lab.
  • Prepare materials for reports. As skills develop, analyze data.
  • Collect and track data, perform data entry for reports and maintain records of methods used.
  • Assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory and facility equipment.
  • As skills develop, may train, provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling of students and newer employees to assure compliance with UI policies and procedures.
  • Read and understand protocols.
  • Assist IGS by conducting field work and laboratory analyses, including geophysical data collection, shallow well installation, water level measurements, water quality sampling and data analyses. Conduct field work related to slug tests and drilling/soil sampling. Up to 50% of the time spent on conducting field work requiring several overnights per month.
  • Assist with procurement of supplies and materials. May initiate purchasing requests, monitor accounts/expenditures; reconcile statements.
  • Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for research protocols.
  • Assist in documenting compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project.

Education Requirement


  • A bachelor’s degree in geology, environmental science, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.


Required Qualifications


  • Possession of a valid driver’s license, plus the ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standards (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V, Chapter 19).
  • Working experience or coursework with ArcGIS and databases.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • One year of experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on geological and groundwater resources.
  • Working knowledge of hydrologic field methods and terminology.
  • Ability to travel the surrounding area and perform field work up to 50% of the time, requiring several overnights per month.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in research environment.


Desired Qualifications


  • Work experience within a geological agency at the state or federal level.
