Job Description

Grade 20: Starting salary is $68,791.00. Rate of pay depends on qualifications.

JOB SUMMARY
The Geologist provides technical service to staff by conducting geologic assessments, surface and/or subsurface characterization studies, involving bedrock mapping, remote sensing, well drilling supervision, borehole and surface geophysics, stream flow studies, aquifer testing, water quality testing, aquifer test analysis, geologic feature review, and groundwater modeling in support of various water quality and water supply programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains hard copy and electronic geological data.
  • Analyzes data associated with the modeling or evaluation of geologic features.
  • Develops recommendations concerning geologic and pollution abatement measures, and environmental and regulatory matters.
  • Reviews geologic assessments for thoroughness and comparative accuracy to include conducting assessments of a feature or features, a geologic assessment of a portion of an identified area or project, or a complete geologic assessment of a property or project.
  • Supports the development of standing operating procedures, sample plans, and various technical reports.
  • Calibrates, operates, and maintains scientific equipment in order to successfully perform water quality and water level sampling activities.
  • Maintains and updates electronic databases and archived scientific data.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Oversees monitor well installation and drill cutting activities.
  • Organizes, analyzes, and interprets geological data related to the hydrology and geology of the Edwards Aquifer or any other aquifers.
  • Maintains electronic databases, utilizes computer-based modeling software to simulate surface and subsurface conditions, analyzes and produces reports.
  • Researches, analyzes and assembles geologic data for review of site assessments, environmental issues, and development activities to ensure compliance with local and state regulations.
  • Participates in local, state, and national agency research activities and meetings.
  • Drafts and presents geological data reports.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
  • Must be a licensed, professional geologist in the State of Texas.
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrology, Chemistry, Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, Environmental Science or related field from an institution accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.
  • Five years' experience in hydrology and geology including three years' experience working with a karst aquifer or karst environment, preferably the Edwards Aquifer.
  • Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), geological well analysis software, and geology.
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training within 12 months of hire.

  • Ability to characterize the quantity, distribution, circulation, and physical properties of underground and surface waters.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and external customers, contractors, consultants, and property owners.
  • Skill in conducting environmental site assessments and identifying water-related geologic hazards.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include lifting up to 40 pounds occasionally. Subject to stooping, crawling, and walking on uneven terrain to perform job scope. Working conditions are in an office environment with approximately fifty percent of time spent in the field visiting project sampling sites where there is heavy traffic, construction, rugged terrain, and inclement and hazardous and inclement environmental conditions. May be required to travel to conduct quarterly sampling events.

May be required to work hours other than regular schedule such as nights, weekends and holidays.
