Job Description

Job Summary:

Responsible for assessing individual or family risk for a variety of inherited conditions, such as genetic disorders and birth defects. Provide information to other health care providers or to individuals and families concerned with the risk of inherited conditions. Advise individuals and families to support informed decision making and coping methods for those at risk. May help conduct research related to genetic conditions or genetic counseling.

Job Duties:

  • Interviews patients, relatives and others to obtain and evaluate data on personal medical and family history.
  • Analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.
  • Analyzes and interprets information about the genetic disorder and inheritance patterns to aid in diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
  • Actively participates in tumor board, and presents at monthly genetics meetings.
  • Counsels and educates patients and families by explaining aspects of the disease, current state of knowledge, possible risks, potential diagnostic techniques and appropriate management.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Independently completes all paperwork and patient/insurance follow ups

Education:

Master's degree in genetic counseling from an accredited ABGC Institution is required.

Experience:

No experience is required.

Additional Licenses and Certifications:

Eligible as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetics Counseling.
