Job Description
Overview

The RTI University Collaboration Office seeks a prospect for the Genetic Counseling Research Rotation Internship within the Social, Statistical, & Environmental Sciences (SSES) unit.

The Genomics and Translational Research Center team conducts research that traverses the research spectrum from basic discovery to translation: illuminating causes, consequences, and interventions for human disease to advance public health and well-being of affected individuals and their caregivers.

Throughout their non-clinical rotation, the genetic counseling student will spend time with the RTI genetic counselors working in various projects. The student will have the opportunity to tour the RTI campus, on-campus NBS laboratory, and attend relevant meetings. There may be opportunities to participate in qualitative research such as focus groups or interviews. The student will learn about curation and interpretation of genetic variants. There may be opportunities to observe the return of NBS results to participants and participate in psychosocial follow-up of those who received positive NBS results. The student will also learn about the regulatory process and IRB. The culmination of the rotation will be the development and presentation of a rotation project.

Learning Objectives:
  • Have a basic understanding of qualitative research methods.
  • Describe the development of IRB protocols and the process for IRB review.
  • Define the objectives, methods and/or results of two translational research projects.
  • Recognize the roles of genetic counselors working in a research setting.
  • Identify and utilize tools for genomic variant interpretation and return of results.

Responsibilities
  • Communicate and collaborate with RTI genetic counselors to achieve learning objectives.
  • Work independently on a rotation project.
  • Attend observational experiences with RTI staff and keep a log of completed experiences or assignments.
