Job Description
Overview

The RTI University Collaboration Office seeks a prospect for the Research Assistant Internship within the Discovery Sciences (DS) unit.

Our lab examines the neurobiology of substance use behaviors and other psychiatric illnesses using optogenetic, viral, genetic, and pharmacological tools in rodents to develop treatments for psychiatric illnesses.

The intern will assist in screening mitochondrially-targeted drugs and their effects on behavior, and will become acquainted with the overall project and approaches. Our goal is to apply novel pharmacological and viral tools to understand the signaling mechanisms underlying substance use disorders. To this end, we aim to develop tools for real-time recording and manipulation of neuronal mitochondrial activity in awake behaving rodents. The intern will assist with multiple aspects of this project.

Learning Objectives:
  • Perform animal care and injections and perfusions
  • Present and interpret data in lab meeting
  • Observe rodent stereotaxic surgery
  • Analyze data and create graphs
  • Distinguish strategies for applying viral and optogenetic techniques

Responsibilities
  • Basic behavioral assays (e.g. Locomotion, drug reward and sensitization, anxiety, pain, food reward)
  • Animal handling, care, and injections
  • Tissue fixation, slicing and processing
  • Data and video analysis
  • Become familiar with rodent stereotaxic surgery and fiber photometry techniques.
