Why does the job exist?

This Youth Advocate position will advise, design, implement, and collaborate on new policy and legislation related to Transition Aged Youth to ensure all young people leaving foster care have the opportunities and support needed for a successful transition into adulthood.

How does it get done?

Incumbent will collaborate with stakeholders on the design and implementation of Extended Foster Care legislation and other Transition Aged youth initiatives by collection of information, data, research and presentation of relevant information according to the needs of the agency, participate in regular department meetings, prepare testimony for state legislative hearings, and attend local or statewide workgroups, provide knowledge and insight to department leadership related to the unique needs and experiences of youth transitioning to adulthood, review and advise on the development of policy, procedure manuals, and other documents as they progress toward completion, engage in policy advocacy and strategic communication opportunities as they arise such as blog writing, phone, or video media interviews, and may be asked to participate in Youth Engagement Training (YET) with Youth MOVE members. Youth Advocates may also work with youth advocates to identify the training needs of different CYFD agencies and collaborate with CYFD leadership to develop and implement YET for CYFD staff and stakeholders.

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in Social Sciences or Human Services and two (2) years of experience as a social worker or community coordinator and/or social worker assistant. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess a valid Driver's License. Pre-employment criminal background check is required and conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
