Job Description
A Forensic Evidence Technician assists laboratory staff by conducting routine tasks and analysis. He/she reports to and receives direction from the Technical Leader.
Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of sterile laboratory technique.
  • Ability to follow written procedures and protocols as well as oral instruction.
  • Work with minimal supervision, prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Must be highly organized and be able to maintain detailed, accurate records.
  • Basic knowledge of computer software applications.
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations including quality assurance related systems
  • Ability to learn the operation of laboratory equipment and specialized computer software programs.
  • Ability to write reports, and laboratory policy/procedures.
  • Ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with law enforcement agencies, faculty, staff and service personnel.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be self motivated and have the ability to establish work priorities and independently perform duties.
  • Understand and use scientific measurement.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as function independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with scientific and non-scientific personnel.

Physical Demands:
  • Travel may be required.
  • High level of visual acuity.
  • Agility and coordination in handling equipment and samples as required by laboratory protocol.

Characteristic Duties:
  • Organizes and maintains detailed records, follows established protocols relating to all aspects of laboratory operation.
  • Conducts examination and serological screening of forensic evidentiary items.
  • Inventories, organizes and prepares samples for DNA analysis using both manual and automated methods.
  • Performs lab work on databasing samples and forensic evidentiary items. Performs automated and manual sample processing, extraction, quantitation, normalization, amplification, setup and run of CE instrumentation. Performs basic analysis using DNA Analysis software under supervision. Generates reports in accordance to established procedures and protocols.
  • Reviews current safety procedures and practices safe storage and handling of hazardous and toxic materials
  • Performs laboratory maintenance and calibration of equipment as scheduled
  • Performs general laboratory maintenance and calibration of equipment. Operates, calibrates, cleans and performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment. Follows up with manufacturer/service provider when problems arise.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Participates in the continuing education program.
  • Guides and assists interns, and graduate assistants
  • Provides court testimony.
  • Maintains cleanliness, safety, security and organization of all laboratories and work areas Follows protocols for chain of custody and sample control
  • Drafts procedures/protocols related to DNA methodologies under evaluation
  • Prepares reagents and solutions following standardized formulas and protocols
  • Attends required meetings and participates on committees as directed
  • Assists in maintenance of laboratory inventory and purchase order records
  • Assists in the validation of new laboratory procedures and equipment
  • Assists staff with daily QA/QC requirements


Location MURC - Marshall University Research Corporation Salary Range $18.00/ hour
Required Qualifications

Education
Associate’s degree or 30 hours of college credit.

Experience
  • An emphasis in a forensic related science or laboratory experience through course work or work experience is preferred.
  • Exposure to the use of laboratory instrumentation and laboratory methods preferred.
