Job Description
Oregon State University Extension Service invites applications for six (6) part-time, intermittent Food Service Worker 2 positions for the Oregon 4-H Conference and Education Center. The hours for this position will fluctuate according to programming needs, with increased hours anticipated during spring and fall outdoor school and summer camp seasons. Fewer hours are projected during the winter months (mid-November, December, January, February) when programming is limited.
The position is a part of the OSU Extension 4-H Youth Development program. The Oregon 4-H Center is a youth camp and conference facility approximately eight (8) miles from downtown Salem. It is a rural area and is not on public transportation lines. The 4-H Center offers year-round operations, with spring/fall outdoor school, summer camp and other retreat and user group activities. Food service is an integral part of the outdoor school and camp experience. User groups requiring food service may range in size from 25 to 200. Flexibility, initiative, self-motivation, team work, and the ability to communicate and work under sometimes stressful conditions is essential.
The Food Service Worker 2 performs a variety of regular food service activities such as setting up condiments and food pans; preparing foods such as salads, dressings, sandwiches, eggs, fruit, and pudding in a volume dining or food service facility under the direction/instruction of a higher level staff member for camp guests, outdoor school students, staff, campers, or others; clearing and cleaning tables, counters, serving areas; washing dishes, pots and pans; cleaning various areas as assigned.

Position Duties
The Food Service Worker embeds the commitment of the university to a collaborative and inclusive community in all interactions and duties performed and contributes to a welcoming and respectful workplace culture.
50% – Food Service and Food Preparation
Typical tasks: prepares foods according to standardized menus, recipes, or verbal instructions given by supervisor or higher-level cook; makes salads, dressings, gelatin, toast, or sandwiches; grills sandwiches, pancakes, eggs, french toast, hashbrowns; cleans, cuts, and chops vegetables and fruits; slices meats, cheeses, and breads; cuts desserts; prepares sack lunches; prepares desserts such as puddings, cobblers, loaf cakes, slices and wraps bread and/or other baked items; checks for proper temperature of prepared foods with thermometer; checks daily and records temperatures of dishwasher, refrigerator units; observes food to ensure that it is visually appealing; sets up and refills condiments, dispensers, and food pans, or other requests; may transport food supplies and meals using a variety of carts and vehicles; labels, in necessary, and puts food away in designated storage.
40% – Dishwashing and Cleaning Functions
Typical tasks in kitchen and dining areas: cleans tables, chairs, sinks, counters, serving areas; vacuums, sweeps and mops floors; wipes spills, collects and removes trash; replaces trash can liners; washes trays and carts; sorts and stacks dishes, glasses, utensils; washes dishes, pots, pans; fills and empties dishwasher and stacks clean dishes, glasses, cups; cleans coffee pots, blenders, and other commercial equipment; cleans stoves, grills, and countertops; keeps work area in sanitary condition at all times; cleans and maintains the dining area, including coffee bar, tables, chairs, floors, salad bar, dish area or other; breaks down boxes for cardboard recycler; takes garbage to the dumpster; cleans restrooms and other areas as assigned, replaces paper products when needed; may be required to lift up to 50 pounds using safety procedures; may perform other cleaning duties as assigned.
10% – Miscellaneous
Typical tasks: may assist customers/guests; may assist other food service workers in food preparing, distributing, and cleaning; responds to questions, compliments or complaints concerning the food or service from customers/guests; has regular contact with customers/guests while serving food and cleaning; attends kitchen staff meetings when scheduled by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in a commercial food service utility.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • As the camp has high and low volume seasons this position will work intermittently throughout the year. Spring, summer, and fall will generally be full time work (40 hours per week), while the November through February season may be on call with few or no hours.
  • Typically, the schedule may be morning, afternoon and/or evening shift. May include weekend work as needed to meet the needs of customers. Includes long periods of standing; works with and around heat producing equipment such as ovens, steam kettle, grill, stoves, dishwasher, hot water, proofer or other; works with sharp or bladed equipment such as knives, tomato slicer, meat/cheese slicer, box cutters, or other.
  • Position is in a rural youth camp kitchen.
  • Lifts up to 50 pounds of weight.
  • Regular in-person contact with customers, delivery drivers and food suppliers to receive goods.
This position is deemed essential and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
