Fleet is interested in hiring someone to support the Fleet Services unit for the DCAS Client Fleet. This position will be a mechanic inspector and may be called on to perform any role of a DCAS mechanic inspector. However, this inspector will be focused on the EV charging and acceleration initiatives. The mechanic inspector may also assist with legally mandated safety retrofit initiatives. Th mechanic inspector will work on EVSE installation, mobile and emergency power projects, solar carports, and EV and other vehicle maintenance in all five boroughs.
Responsibilities:
  • Operated medium and heavy-duty vehicles including box trucks and fuel container trucks
  • Assist with technical mechanical projects, including assisting with preparation and research for technical contract specifications, and installations in relation to Vision Zero, Fleet Sustainability, and other initiatives. Help plan and inspect trucks for repowering to electric.
  • Assist with the maintenance and installation of EV fast charging and level 2 charging systems, as well as portable chargers and solar carports.
  • Inspect and operate City fueling trucks and equipment.
  • Coordinate installation of truck side-guards and other safety retrofit devices on City vehicles and contracted trucks in accordance with local law.
  • Assist with basic pre-trip and other maintenance and/or repairs as needed on DCAS Client units.
  • Support general fleet initiatives and perform related functions consistent with the civil service title.
  • Test electric charging systems and vehicles to ensure work was done correctly.
  • Inspect all repairs assigned by Supervisor. Ensure that vendor request for repairs are required and priced in accordance with labor hour and parts prices as shown in industry pricing guides or as shown in the DCAS service contract. Work in coordination with other inspectors.
  • For collision repairs, inspect shop estimate and resolve matters not documented on the appraisal. Discuss alternative work approach to determine if repairs can be done quicker and at greater savings.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an auto mechanic; or
2. Not less than two and one-half years of full-time satisfactory experience as specified in "1" above plus sufficient helper or apprentice experience or relevant full-time education acquired in a college, university,technical school, trade school or vocational high school approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, to make up the equivalent of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of helper or apprentice experience or relevant education.
License Requirements:
At the time of appointment candidates must possess a New York State Class B Commercial Driver License ("CDL") or a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York and a Learner's Permit for a Class B Commercial Driver License. Appointees hired with a Learner's Permit must obtain the Class B CDL within six months of appointment. The CDL, with no restrictions that would preclude the performance of Auto Mechanic work, must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with specifications for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, i.e. Word and Excel
  • Previous experience reviewing and analyzing vehicle estimates/invoices

Only individuals who are serving permanent in the title of Auto Mechanic or who have taken and successfully passed and reachable on the Auto Mechanic exam are eligible to apply.
