Job Summary
Recreational Sports is seeking a Fitness and Wellness Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Fitness and Wellness (FW) Format Coordinator focuses on coordinating the staff education and program delivery for group fitness, specialty fitness, personal training and small group training programs.
This position is one of two Fitness and Wellness Coordinators in the department that works in concert to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate fitness and wellness activities to be delivered to the OSU campus community. The Fitness and Wellness area focuses on providing choices for the OSU community to pursue activities that will advance a person’s holistic health. Student employees in the area learn foundational concepts to develop fitness and wellness literacy to move through to a certification level.
The FW Format Coordinator educates and prepares student employees to deliver fitness and wellness programs and advance their skills in the delivery of the programs. The Coordinator leads the learning and knowledge acquisition of curriculum designed to prepare student employees to deliver group fitness formats, such as: cycling, strength training, metabolic conditioning, and mind-body classes. This position is responsible for the support and advancement of group fitness instructors’ skills. This position identifies, designs, and coordinates the delivery of activities that provide OSU students and community members a sense of community, based in fitness and wellness programs.
The FW Format Coordinator oversees the personal training, small group training and specialty group fitness formats, designed to advance participants’ knowledge and skills as they relate to their personal fitness and wellness endeavors. This includes coordinating curriculum and training to educate student staff to be provide peer-to-peer experiences in the delivery these programs to students and community members.
The FW Format Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness. The coordinator also assists the Assistant Director with building partnerships, delivering content and structuring practicums with campus partners.

Key Responsibilities
60% Fitness Formats
  • Compiles data, makes recommendations and forecasts to support the development of the Fitness and Wellness area budget. Monitors and analyzes financial reports in areas of responsibility and works within the established budget to effectively administer the Format area of Fitness and Wellness.
  • Researches emerging fitness and wellness trends, necessary equipment needs, and implementation strategies used by other universities and in the industries.
  • Coordinates the identification, development, implementation and evaluation of fitness formats to actively sustain and advance opportunities that lead to a state of holistic health for the OSU community. The diverse offerings include: group fitness, small group training, personal training and specialty fitness. These formats build community to contribute to the wellbeing of students and the campus community. The activities are planned in collaboration with the Fitness and Wellness Foundations Coordinator to ensure alignment of format structure and curriculum progression.
  • Works in coordination with the Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness to determine equipment for fitness formats, ensuring that current trends, participant needs and research are documented to support purchasing. Makes equipment purchases, establishes risk management policies and coordinates maintenance needs.
  • Assists the Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness in building partnerships with academic colleges, Student Affairs, and other campus partners to facilitate practicums and instruction in the Fitness and Wellness area. Collaborates with campus partners to advance fitness formats for the purpose of equalizing student success.
  • Assists the Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness in facilitating and leading PAC courses.
  • Educates and prepares student employees in the delivery of fitness formats. The Coordinator advances student employee’s foundational skills through established curriculum to be capable to deliver peer-to-peer experiences. The focus of this position is teaching student employees’ effective skills and competencies to lead their peers in fitness formats. Leads student staff to successfully implement program activities while adhering to university, department and national governing body policies, procedures, and risk management standards.
  • In concert with the Fitness and Wellness team: researches, plans, develops, and implements fitness and wellness activities and programming that can be delivered to the OSU campus community in a hybrid model that provides remote and on-campus access.
  • Develops, reviews, schedules and enters annual/quarterly Fitness and Wellness activities within the Recreational Sports scheduling process to ensure all facilities, equipment, marketing, and maintenance requests are documented and accurate. Collaborates with the Fitness and Wellness team to ensure areas of responsibility have been scheduled and recreation management software is accurate.
  • Plans and maintains comprehensive in-house format training for fitness formats, including: coordination of training schedule, evaluation criteria, training content, curriculum development and continuing education practices. Conducts continual assessment and management of all student fitness format instructors and trainers through direct observation and assessment while teaching.
  • Assists the Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness to evaluate the cost/benefit for Recreational Sports to provide new activities and programs, including preparing presentation information for the student fee process.


20% Supervision
  • Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, assigns work, evaluates, and terminates student staff and practicum/internship students. Included in leadership and management is the oversight of the approximately forty student staff in Fitness and Wellness Foundations and the Wellness foundations formats.
  • Supports all Fitness and Wellness area student staff with onsite supervision and ongoing professional development.
  • Coordinates, plans, implements, and evaluates outcomes-based training and meetings for student staff.

15% Wellness and Fitness Foundations
  • Assists Fitness Foundations Coordinator with support and supervision of student staff to successfully deliver format activities.
  • Assists with the implementation and evaluation of leadership training for Fitness and Wellness Foundations student staff.
  • Maintains knowledge of the Fitness and Wellness foundations area to assist when needed, including student employee training requirements, current schedules, equipment, student employee information, area reports/evaluations, risk management, registration processes and software used.
  • Assists Fitness and Wellness Foundations Coordinator, when needed, to successfully implement foundations classes, informational sessions and educational events, Find Your Fit and wellness programming, to increase access to Recreational Sports, and provide introduction and social support to participants in a one-on-one environment.

5% Department Responsibilities, Professional Development and Other Duties
  • Pursues professional development opportunities.
  • Represents Recreational Sports at division, university, and community levels in areas such as: committee work, program development and community engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Participates in the development of the Fitness and Wellness program area long term and short-term strategic planning in areas of programs, personnel, department policies, budgets, facilities, and risk management.

What You Will Need
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge, and ability in staff development, supervising, mentoring, training, and evaluating of employees, and practicum/interns.
  • B.S. in Public Health, Kinesiology/Exercise Science, Sciences, Health Promotion, Education, or related field.
  • NCCA Accredited Certification in Personal Training/Strength and Conditioning.
  • Demonstrated experience with self-directed work and the ability to prioritize workload while handling multiple tasks and deadlines using strong leadership, organizational, attention to detail, time management and decision-making skills.
  • Certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED, Standard First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens/Universal Precautions within 90 days of hire.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in delivering fitness and/or exercise educational classes or trainings for staff and participants.
  • Excellent communication skills including public speaking, clear instruction, writing skills, and attentive listening.
