Job Description

Position Summary

The Analyst, FP&A is a member of the Financial Planning and Analysis team, working in collaboration with the accounting, advancement, and programs teams. As a critical support to the Financial Planning and Analysis team, the Analyst, FP&A will assist in financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, and reporting activities, leading to continuing financial sustainability, cost recovery strategies, and future insights. This position manages tight deadlines and a multitude of activities including costing allocations, budget proposal support, financial reporting and analysis support, year-end audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities. As needed, this position may provide support to other Finance-related functions, such as the month-end close process.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with the annual audit process.
  • Emulates and participates in a culture of shared leadership and promotes organizational values.
  • Builds and cultivates relationships internally and externally where appropriate, acts as organizational brand ambassador as needed and provides business development support and input where there is opportunity.
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of the annual budget and quarterly forecast processes across all functions and departments through appropriate coordination, preparation, scheduling, reporting, and analysis.
  • Protects the Foundation’s sensitive information by keeping that information confidential.
  • Maintains and updates FP&A procedures, staff training materials, and other documentation.
  • Contributes to team effort by completing other projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Assists in the monitoring of incoming and outgoing work ensuring FP&A team is organized.
  • Coordinates and supports the costing allocation process in Workday and Adaptive Planning daily, as needed.
  • May perform financial analysis and create financial models to assist departments or programs and management in decision making, planning, and staffing.
  • Assists in collaborating with the Advancement division and programmatic departments to develop financially sound, effective and efficient budgets for contracts and proposals.
  • Assists in the management of financial reports and dashboards in Workday and Adaptive Planning.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and training for relevant certifications.

In addition to above stated duties, Analyst, FP&A II minimum qualifications require three of the following and Analyst, FP&A III minimum qualifications require four or more:

  • Minimum of three (3) + years of non-profit accounting.
  • Demonstrates subject matter expertise in at least one area of accounting: GAAP and FASB compliance, federal awards/contract fiscal compliance, Workday ERP system, Adaptive Planning, or other areas as determined by finance leadership.
  • Supervises and trains entry level accounting staff providing operational level support and training of assigned activities (i.e., review project accounting work, Workday training, Adaptive training, professional development).
  • Holds at least one professional credential, certification, and/or advanced degree relevant to work.
  • Minimum of three (3) + years of related work experience in budget development, forecast, and budget planning.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Level of Supervision

  • Receives general direction as to goals and the achievement of those goals. Evaluated based on the successful performance of essential job duties and responsibilities and achievement of goals. Subject to broad communications associated with the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints and respond appropriately.
  • Ability to interpret and apply accounting theory to transactions.
  • Ability to work accurately with numerical detail and create useful management reports.
  • Knowledge of Workday and Adaptive Planning technology systems is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) required.
  • Understanding of revenue recognition rules is preferred.
  • Knowledge of an integrated accounting system is required.
  • Ability to effectively present information and answer questions for Foundation customers, partners, and management.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to efficiently manage time.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with Foundation employees at all levels, program and client staff, and consumers encountered in the course of work.
  • Ability to work remotely and navigate various technology platforms (Zoom, MS Office Suite-Teams, Outlook, Salesforce Lightning and other database programs, Google Suite, etc.).
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interrupt ongoing work to respond to customer and vendor inquiries.
  • Grant and/or fund accounting experience is preferred.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.

Education and Experience

  • Familiarity with the Community College system a plus.
  • Relevant BA/BS, equivalent work experience, or a combination of both preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) + years of grant, project, and/or costing accounting experience preferred.
  • Any experience in an education or non-profit environment preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) + years of related work experience in finance or accounting.

Working Hours, Location, and Travel

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, with additional hours as needed to address the organization’s needs. This is a California-based position, with the flexibility to work remotely (in California) or in person at our Sacramento office. This position may require moderate travel to attend meetings, conferences, and perform other essential functions of the job.

Physical Requirements

The following physical requirements are essential to the performance of this position: (1) ability to work at a computer workstation for periods up to 4 hours at a time and for up to 8 hours per day for up to five consecutive days; (2) ability to operate a computer and other office equipment such as a computer printer, webcam, microphone, and telephone; (3) ability to communicate and exchange information accurately. Final salary and rates are based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.
