Field Technician
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Associate's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and two (2) years of full-time field sampling experience or a Bachelor’s degree with coursework in Environmental Sciences or related subjects involving environmental field sampling will be considered. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Engineering or related field. Experience working with onsite septic systems or sewage treatment plants. Experience performing water quality analyses including dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, total suspended solids, and other wastewater analyses.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Center for Clean Water Technology (CCWT) at Stony Brook University seeks a full-time Field Technician to support efforts in field testing technologies to improve drinking and ground water quality. Under the guidance of the supervisor, the successful candidate will assist with monitoring and gathering data from full- and mesoscale installations of water treatment projects. The appointed candidate will be capable of working independently, but also enjoy being part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists and staff. Excellent communication skills are essential. The successful candidate will participate in the development of realistic solutions to Long Island's water quality problems. The field technician role is critical in providing data necessary to develop technologies which prevent or remediate nutrient pollution in Long Island's estuaries and drinking water aquifers.
Responsibilities will include the following:
- Collect water samples from experimental treatment systems installed at residential and commercial sites across Long Island, such as Nitrogen Removing Biofilters, Constructed Wetlands, and mesoscale field experiments.
- Supervise and train sampling team ensuring protocols established by NYS Department of Health and University are followed.
- Perform routine wastewater laboratory analyses including five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids and alkalinity. Laboratory cleaning and maintenance of supplies according to SBU Laboratory Safety guidelines.
- Coordinate scheduling of sample collection and various laboratory tasks and analyses.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Assist with office duties, report on the conditions of the sites and experimental treatment systems, and assist with field and laboratory data entry and analysis.
- Record observations and onsite water quality measurements, including dissolved oxygen, pH, and electrical conductivity. Participation in lab meetings. Share results with collaborators.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
