Media Systems Technician


Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s Degree (Foreign equivalent or higher degree). In lieu of degree, four [4] years of directly related full time experience may be considered. Two [2] years of full time experience maintaining media systems. Experience with media system installation including wiring and mechanical (hand and power tools) skills. Experience with digital media systems, video conferencing systems, data projection, audio, and video and projection systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree (or foreign equivalent or higher). Experience maintaining complex media systems. Experience supporting users in an advanced, interactive media presentation environment. Experience installing complex media systems. Experience mounting data projectors, flat panels and other heavy items to walls and ceilings. Experience and understanding of networking architecture as it pertains to media systems and digital media. Crestron systems repair experience. Certified Technology Specialist (CTS Certification) or Crestron Systems Training.
Brief Description:
The position of Media Systems Technician is responsible for maintaining and assisting in the installation of current, complex media systems supporting classroom instruction, research and administration.
The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.
Duties:
Test systems, respond to trouble calls, track repairs using IT Service Management (ITSM), perform preventative maintenance, and make necessary adjustments, updates, modifications and repairs. Create custom cables, solder and crimp cables, replace jacks, identify/provision and replace faulty hardware, update software/firmware, make necessary hardware and software adjustments to restore system functionality. Systems and equipment repair/maintenance and end user support:
  • Fabricate cables and adaptors for repairs using various methods (solder, crimp and compression).
  • Troubleshoot systems to component level.
  • Replace or repair cables, jacks and other needed components.
  • Update equipment firmware and software, confirm proper functionality after updates.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on AV systems.
  • Operate test equipment including multimeter, light meter, real time analyzer, and signal generators.
  • Monitor and correct issues with instructional systems including lecture capture, digital signage, media production, communication, security, scheduling systems etc.
  • Test classroom network jacks to confirm status. Report problems to Network Services.
  • Terminate and test audio, video, control and network cables.
  • In performance of all job duties, at all times be responsible for delivering optimal customer service, for protecting institutional data and privacy, and the excellent delivery of solutions and services by following divisional and University policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Move, install and repair learning/meeting space furniture as needed. Place, install, repair, modify and maintain lecterns, media cabinets, classroom furniture, screens/ shades, writing surfaces and other items.
  • Replace defective hardware, make necessary adjustments to restore system to full functionality.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on systems including lamp changing, cleaning, focus/ alignments, replacing system components and adjusting systems for optimum performance.

Systems installation, upgrades and modification:

  • Document installs, label systems and assist in creating user documentation. Follow approved documentation during installation.
  • Installation skills include pulling cable, soldering, wiring low voltage and 120-volt devices, uploading control system programs and mounting presentation equipment on various materials.
  • Fabricate cables and adaptors for new installations using various methods (solder, crimp and compression).
  • Prepare equipment for installation – assign IP address, set input and output levels, update firmware, create backup files, etc.
  • Install media support equipment including audio, video, lighting, computers, network cameras, presentation control systems, switching systems and other presentation support equipment.

Administration, Documentation and Organization:

  • Assist in maintaining records of installed equipment including location, IP addresses, model/serial numbers, passwords and other equipment attributes
  • Assist in the preparation of purchase orders, tracking order status and closing purchase requests.
  • Participate in peer reviews of systems designs and failure analysis.
  • Use Help Desk System (ITSM) to document service calls and maintenance activities. Follow-up on repairs requested of others.
  • Inventory equipment and supplies. Assist in ordering supplies.
  • Report system status to faculty and other department members.
  • Notify building manager of any relevant problems including lighting, HVAC, custodial and other maintenance issues.

Training and systems operation

  • Assist in training faculty and staff in system operation.
  • Establish video conference connections between sites for presenters, customize room settings to meet instructional needs.
  • Assist in the training and supervision of student assistants. Work with student assistants on assigned tasks. Explain task requirements, teach them new skills, and coach them through task completion.

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Participate in and provide professional development. Maintain a clean, organized workspace.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
The position requires lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds aided and unaided by dollies and carts within a continuous and repetitive basis, the ability to work with hand and power tools, and the ability to work at heights greater than 30 feet.

Primary hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday. Hours may change to accommodate changes in staffing, class and project schedules. Will be required to work at all Stony Brook locations including West, East, South and Southampton.
