JOB DESCRIPTION: Facilities Carpenter and General Office Support Technician tasked with planning, altering, constructing, and repairing a wide variety of structures and equipment in an office environment. Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain, hold, and maintain a Top Secret Security Clearance.
DUTIES: Perform preventive maintenance work orders to inspect, clean, and test various office related structures and devices including automatic doors, metal doors, dock openers, handrails, etc. Perform a variety of carpentry duties to lay out, alter, construct, and repair a wide variety of structures such as platforms, flooring, office partitions, movable partitions, modular furniture including all accessories and components, castings, work benches, stairs, concrete forms, trusses, buildings, cabinet work, doors, locks, windows, moldings, picture frames, white boards, office signage, and furniture. Construct and erect scaffolding for own work. Install and repair metal doors and jambs. Patch, seal, and replace substrate as required to repair small roof problems. Install roofs on temporary buildings and structures. May breakout concrete, excavate, build forms and place reinforcing as required to pour and finish small concrete jobs. Perform construction, installation, repair, and removal of plaster and dry wall type construction using wood, metal, or other type studs. Install and maintain acoustical ceiling systems. Install thermal insulation in walls and ceilings. Install and replace broken glass. Construct and repair skids necessary for equipment to be stored. Identify and request proper material for assigned jobs as may be required and/pr recommend substitute materials when specified items are not available or take requirements and device article to fulfill specific needs. Devise work holding methods and fixtures. May occasionally sharpen own tools and cutters. Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment as required to accomplish assigned tasks. Operate electric power-driven equipment such as band saws, sanders, table saws, planers drills, lathers, shapers, etc. Perform other duties as assigned. Keep own work area clean and orderly.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE: Minimum four years.
INITIATIVE AND INGENUITY: Plan and perform a wide variety of chiller plant and refrigeration duties where only general operating instructions are available. Resourcefulness and skills required to modify and adjust facility equipment to meet requirements of precise temperature control without instruction and in the absence of precedents. Considerable ingenuity required to diagnose breakdowns or serious delays in operations and testing. Diagnose malfunctions in equipment and effectively repair in expeditious manner. Modify equipment controls to achieve the most energy efficient operation possible. Operate computer-based systems.
PHYSICAL DEMAND: Occasionally handle medium and heavy material or tools for repairs. Occasionally work in cramped positions or on ladders and scaffolding. Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs and handle heavier components/items on an occasional basis.
MENTAL OR VISUAL DEMAND: Continuous mental and visual attention to install, maintain, and repair equipment within standard operating limits.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT: Careless maintenance or operation may result in damage to expensive equipment that might cost several thousand dollars. Loss of cooling to computer equipment or test equipment would incur further losses and impact programs.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR MATERIAL OR PRODUCT: Incorrect diagnosis of trouble and improper repair of equipment may result in damage to equipment or to material contained in equipment. Inefficient operation may result in waste of fuel and power possibly exceeding several thousand dollars.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS: Responsible only for own work but may follow up and work with training employees.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Somewhat disagreeable working conditions with exposure to noise and heat. Exposure to gases, fumes, low temperatures, oils, developing fluids, dust, sun, etc.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS: Chance of crushing hand or feet with parts or tools. Inhaling of gases might result in temporary disability. Danger of burns or possible eye injury. Proper use of safety equipment is required.
