Job Description
The Optician is responsible for assisting patients with ophthalmic eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions.


Eye Care Assistant range $18-$21 DOE with ability to go higher for highly experienced candidates.


  • Collect and post payments onto systems and balance cash till at end of day according to Cash Handling Protocols.
  • Assembly and mounting of lenses into frames.
  • Provide front desk support when needed, registering patient information using two (2) patient identifiers at check-in and schedule recall visits at departure.
  • Recommends specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames for patients.
  • Promotes a positive work culture and upholds clinic policies and procedures, including the WE CARE standards of Behavior.
  • Computes amount of sale and collects payment for services. Enter V-code on hardware purchases to bill to insurance and/or self-pay patients.
  • Selects and orders frames for display and maintain proper inventory counts monthly
  • Repairs damaged frames, lens edges and coatings.
  • Assists patients with frame selection.
  • Prepares work orders and instructions for lenses and eyeglass production.
  • Sells contact lenses. Assists patient in insertion and removal of contact lens classes
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Verifies finished lenses match to specifications.
  • Review patient reports daily and calling to schedule patients overdue for an appointment to ensure a full schedule for the providers.
  • Verify patient insurance eligibility and routine/hardware benefits for every insured patient prior to being seen.
  • Generate weekly reports including order status, inventory, pending invoices, and lenses sold.
  • Instructs clients in adapting to, wearing, and caring for eyeglasses.
  • Assists and provides instructions and training to co-workers in the department.
  • Adjusts eyeglasses by heating, bending, and shaping plastic or metal frames.
  • Measures a patient’s bridge and eye size, temple length, seg. height, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes according to Optometry Association guidelines.
  • Input prescription into the blocker and edger systems, select correct lens blank through online protal; block, cut, and polish lenses.
  • Answer incoming phone calls regarding scheduling and general eye care information according to CBHA scheduling protocols.
  • Fills prescriptions for patients based on eye care consultation.
  • Travel to other CBHA locations.
  • Consults with patients to determine a patient’s current lens prescription.


Professional and Technical Knowledge


  • Ability to obtain knowledge of eye care appointment types and scheduling.
  • Possesses basic level of mathematical knowledge typically acquired through completion of a high school program.
  • Ability to obtain knowledge of contact lens fitting and eyeglass ordering, adjustment, and repair.


Technical Skills


  • Ability to work on projects in a group setting and individually.
  • Working knowledge of computer terminals, computer software, calculator and telephone.
  • Ability to prepare basic correspondence and simple reports in Microsoft Word or Excel.


Communication Skills


  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and translating both English and Spanish.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with vendors, manufactures, and insurance companies.
  • Ability to resolve and document clinical issues, complaints, and unexpected incidents.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients and the general public.

In house credit includes for one eye exam every plan year. $200 hardware credit for employee and dependents for prescription hardware (glasses, contacts, prescription sunglasses). Employees and dependents also receive one additional hardware credit per year at CBHA’s cost + 20% (used for non-prescription sunglasses, contact lenses, or a second pair of prescription glasses). $35 copay is waived for preventative services

403 (b) Retirement Plan


Safe Harbor Match Employees are eligible to receive a Safe Harbor Match of 100% up to 4% of the employee’s total salary. Employee is full vested in Safe Harbor Match from day 1. Contributions are subject to IRS guidelines.


Non-Elective Contribution- Provided the employee has met enrollment qualifications, employee will also receive 4% employer contribution of employee’s total salary at the end of the Plan Year at the discretion of Board of Directors.


Vacation (Personal Leave)


Year 1


40 hours front loaded after six (6) months of employment. Accrue at the rate of .0038per hour paid not to exceed a per pay period accrual of .3076 hours for the rest of year one (1). Vacation buyout paid hours are excluded from accrual


Year 2


Accrue at the rate of .0442 per hour paid not to exceed a per pay period accrual of 3.53hours. Vacation buyout paid hours are excluded from accrual.


Year 3


Accrue at the rate of .5576 per hour paid not to exceed a per pay period accrual of 4.46 hours. Vacation buyout paid hours


All employees receive 8 vacation hours for a Wellness Day on their Anniversary Date each year.
