Purpose of the Position

  • The Executive Director, Hospice coordinates and administers the overall Hospice program, including service delivery to meet patient needs, developing and maintain a quality focused culture, business expansion to support growth, regulatory compliance with all applicable agencies and financial performance.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining a state of survey readiness
  • Ensues care provided optimizes the patient and family’s comfort and dignity
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Maintaining accreditation, when applicable
  • Employ qualified personnel to the meet the requirements of written job descriptions in alignment with the staffing evolution guide
  • Ensure orientation of new staff is provided
  • Organizes, manages, and administers hospice resources to provide hospice care and services to patients, families, and caregivers necessary for the palliation and management of the terminal illness and related conditions
  • Serve as primary authority for management of business affairs and overall operation of the program site
  • Ensure hospice follows all applicable Federal, State and Local laws, including;
  • Ensure compliance with annual employee evaluations
  • Perform other duties, including those within the scope of current, valid professional licensure/credentials (i.e. RN, SW, Chaplain, MT, HA, etc.), referencing the position specific job descriptions for additional details on the essential functions of the clinical discipline
  • Oversee the maintenance of the appropriate personnel and administrative records, vendor and facility contracts
  • Ensure alignment with all policies and protocols of the organization
  • Ensures care provided is consistent with patient and family needs and goals, with the patient’s needs and goals as a priority.
  • Manage overall financial performance of the program site which includes oversight of all controllable costs
  • Informs the governing body about ongoing operations, including patient care delivery issues and QAPI activities
  • Develop and implement the program site’s Quality Assurance program and all related activities
  • Participate in annual development of the program site’s budget
  • Ensure the hospice offers a coordinated plan of care for all patients/families while maintaining overall management of care
  • Assist the governing body in formulating and annually reviewing the hospice policies and procedures
  • Participate in all required regional and national meetings and conferences
  • Conduct regularly scheduled leadership meetings consistent with the organization’s expectation and ensure minutes of meetings are recorded
  • Provide regularly scheduled in-service education programs and opportunities for continued education for all staff, covering the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of hospice patients and their families during the final stages of illness, dying and bereavement
  • Ensure all employees and contracted providers are familiar with the philosophy, goals, policies and protocols of the organization
  • Maintain current organizational chart to identify the lines of authority from the governing body to the patient care level
  • Compliance, maintenance and submission of all required reports and records to Federal, State, accreditation, and Local regulatory departments
  • Provide leadership and oversight to support growth through strategic implementation of relationship expansion plans in collaboration with the Business Development teams
  • Designate, in writing, qualified staff member to act in the absence of the administrator
  • Is responsible for the day-to-day hospice operations
