Sophia’s Fund’s mission is to provide support for children and their families, who are affected by pediatric cancer. Reporting to the Board of Directors, and in concert with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Sophia’s Fund, including fundraising and execution of child and family grant-making. They will develop a deep knowledge of pediatric oncology care in the region, as well as cancer survivorship issues for patients and their families. Currently Sophia’s Fund Executive Director will help to strengthen the Board of Directors non profit organizational management, fundraise and make grants to children and families. As the organization grows, the ED will also have responsibility to manage staff, volunteers, interns, and special committees such as an Advisory Council, and events.
Primary Functions
Leadership & Management:
• Ensure ongoing and consistent high quality of financial oversight and administration,
fundraising, communications, and systems management; establish timelines and
resources needed to achieve strategic goals.
• Enhance Sophia’s Fund’s image by being active and visible in the community and by
working closely with other professional, civic, and private organizations
• Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors. As Board Committees are
established, serve as ex-officio of each Board Committee
• As Sophia’s Fund grows, identify, lead, coach, develop, and retain Sophia’s Fund staff
• Actively increase the organization’s understanding and actions as they relate to
diversity, equity, and inclusion to serve the broader community more effectively
• Ensure effective systems to track achievement of the mission, and regularly evaluate
program components, to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to
the board, funders, and other constituents
• Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other legal instruments made and
entered into and on behalf of the organization.
• Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and
for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit.
Fundraising & Communications:
• Responsible for the fiscal integrity of Sophia’s Fund, to include submission to the Board
a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect
the financial condition of the organization. Financial reports will be generated by the
book keeper/accounting staff member and reviewed and approved by the ED and the
Board Treasurer.
• Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the
approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the
organization in a positive financial position.
• Personally stewards a portfolio of major gift donors; identify, plan cultivation, ask for
gifts and steward relationship
• Engage, steward and oversee third-party fundraisers in the community
• Create and execute fundraising opportunities such as house parties, galas, and such
• Contribute to effective requests for proposals for corporate and foundation grants
• Generating new revenue streams and improving financial results
• Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external
relations with the goal of creating a strong brand and reputation
• Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities
Planning & New Business:
• Build partnerships with supporters and collaborators, establishing relationships with
organizations, funders, and community leaders
• Be an external presence that publishes and communicates organizational results with an
emphasis on the power of philanthropy to achieve the mission
Qualifications
The ED will be thoroughly committed to Sophia’s Mission mission. All candidates should have proven organizational, leadership and relationship management experience. Prior non-profit management is highly valued.
Specific requirements include:
• A bachelor’s degree, MBA, or MA -Non-Profit Administration highly valued
• Transparent and high integrity leadership
• Strong in organizational management with the ability to coach Board and staff, set and
achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
• Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage
a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
• Strong public speaking ability.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate
communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
• Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business
planning
• Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
