Position Purpose
Implements a strategic plan for coherent supervision and support of the athletic department aligned to District initiatives and goals. Leads the development and implementation of processes designed to ensure and strengthen staff knowledge, skills, competencies, and abilities. Purposely engages with District Service Center personnel and campus principals to establish systems to ensure students have the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activities. Ensures compliance with all federal, state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and local requirements. Provides instructional leadership support to Campus Principals in order to build leadership capacity to improve practices and increase student achievement. Ensures appropriate support is provided to campuses via coordination across divisions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Program Planning
- Maintains an active program that promotes good sportsmanship and student development including the time, resources, and materials to support accomplishments of department goals.
- Directs and manages the district's athletic program and facilities.
- Oversee the high school and middle school programs in scheduling of athletic activities.
- Establishes and maintains physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in each sport, and verifies each athlete’s eligibility.
- Obtains and uses evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge athletic program effectiveness and ensures that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.
- Directs and manages the overall program of extracurricular and intramural athletics for the district.
- Work with all coaches in developing, maintaining, and revising the athletic program as necessary.
Athletic Events
- Oversees the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing of all District athletic equipment including maintaining a current inventory of supplies, equipment, and fixed assets and recommending disposal and replacement of equipment.
- Coordinates the use of all athletic facilities by non-school groups.
- Plans, organizes, and oversees all athletic awards programs.
- Oversees the process of cleaning, repairing, and maintaining of all District athletic facilities including anticipating need, preventative maintenance, and emergency response.
- Prepares and approves all interscholastic game schedules.
- Manages district athletic operations including directing ticket sales, employing game officials, and ensuring preparation of facilities.
- Approves or arranges transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town athletic events.
Student Management
- Establishes and maintains open lines of communication on vital issues with parents, students, and teachers.
- Implements district student management policies, communicates expected student behavior related to athletics, and ensures enforcement of student discipline in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
Policy, Reports, and Law
- Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other documents required.
- Implements the policies established by federal law, state law, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and local board policy in the area of athletics.
Budget and Inventory
- Maintains a current inventory of supplies and equipment, projects future resource needs, and recommends disposal and replacement of equipment when necessary.
- Develops and administers budget based on documented needs and ensures that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
Personnel Management
- Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates all athletic department personnel and makes recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
- Develops training options and/or improvement plans for employees to ensure exemplary operation in the area of athletics.
Community Relations
- Articulates the district’s mission and goals in the area of athletics to the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission.
- Demonstrates awareness of District and community needs, initiates activities to meet those needs, and uses appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
- Supports athletic booster club activities.
Safety
- Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
- Ensures District facilities and athletic fields remain in safe, playable condition for student athletes.
- Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff, and makes recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.

Other Duties as Assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of federal, state, and UIL policies governing athletics.
- Ability to direct multiple programs for the District, providing for innovative programs and modifications to improve the quality of athletics instruction.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
- Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation, and staff supervision.
- Ability to utilize software to create, access, analyze, and interpret spreadsheets, data dashboards, presentations, email, and documents.
- Knowledge of current District programs, initiatives, and coaching structures.
- Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation and staff supervision.
- Ability to prepare oral or written communications, such as presentations, reports, memoranda, letters, grant proposals, curriculum documents, etc.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Skill in applying leadership skills and managing a large staff and budget.
- Skill in monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
- Knowledge of overall operations of athletic programs.
- Skill in building highly functional instructional leadership teams, and implementing instructional programs effective in improving student academic outcomes.
- Skill in written and oral communication, including ability to interact with and influence all levels of District Service Center, campus staff, and parents.
- Knowledge of budgets and budgeting processes for both local and federal funds and experience in developing and managing central or campus budgets.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Skill in organizational development, communications, public and interpersonal relations.
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate multiple projects, work and training related to the implementation and supervision of innovative programs for the District.
- Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.
- Skill in coordinating, planning, organizing, and facilitating staff development.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Ability to implement policy and procedures.
- Skill in program design, implementation, and management.
Travel Requirements
- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Posture: Frequent prolonged sitting.
- Environment: Frequent District-wide and statewide travel.
- Lifting: Occasional light lifting (less than 15 pounds).
- Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; frequent driving.
- Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
- Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
- Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals and other instructional equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Certification/License:Eligible for a Valid Texas Teaching Certification preferred;
- Education:Master’s degree from an accredited college or university required.
Valid Texas Mid-Management or Principal Certification preferred.
- Experience:
Required: 6 years’ related experience including;3 years’ coaching experience;
3 years’ related supervisory experience.
