Event Coordinator- UNiTE campaign to end violence against women and girls
(date when the selected candidate is expected to start)
UNDP does not tolerate sexual exploitation and abuse, any kind of harassment, including sexual harassment, and discrimination. All selected candidates will, therefore, undergo rigorous reference and background checks.
Background
UN Women is grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women, and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action. The work of UN Women’s Ending Violence against Women (EVAW) Section is broadly focused on a comprehensive approach to ending violence against women (VAW) that addresses legislation and policies, prevention, services for survivors, research and data.
Launched in 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign (UNiTE campaign) is a multi-year effort aimed at preventing and eliminating violence against women and girls around the world. UNiTE calls on governments, civil society, women’s organizations, young people, the private sector, the media, and the entire UN system to join forces in addressing the global pandemic of violence against women and girls. UNiTE was launched in support of the civil society led 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence initiative, an international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.
The United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign (UNiTE campaign) calls for global action to increase awareness, galvanize advocacy efforts, and share knowledge and innovations. The campaign builds on existing international legal and policy frameworks and works to synergize the efforts of all UN offices and agencies working to end violence against women.
This consultancy is intended for the coordination of the UNiTE commemoration event for the International Day (25th November) for the Elimination of Violence against Women, scheduled for 22nd November 2023.
Every year in November, there is a high-level event commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of VAWG (observed on 25th November). This year, the event is being planned for 22nd November 2023 (working around the observance of the Thanksgiving holiday) to kick-start the 16 days of Activism and raise awareness on the pervasive nature of VAWG across all countries and regions around the world and mobilize different stakeholders at the highest level to take action to end VAWG. As in previous years and on the 25th of every month throughout the year, the color orange is used to represent a brighter future, free from violence against women and girls, as unifying theme running through all the global activities of the UNiTE campaign.
The high-level event will take place in the ECOSOC Chamber at the General Assembly[1] and includes an address from the UN Secretary-General (TBC) and interventions from high level representatives from the UN including the Deputy Secretary General, UN Women Executive Director and other Heads of Agencies, Ministers or Ambassadors from Permanent Missions of UN member states, representatives from women’s rights organizations and other high-level representatives across different sectors. The event also includes the participation of UN Women’s Goodwill ambassador and cultural/artistic performances to raise awareness using different modalities to ensure a dynamic event. It is one of the most significant UN events under the leadership of the Secretary General.
The event will be a hybrid format, with an in-person in the General Assembly and connection to virtual participants and live streaming to a global audience.
] This could change depending on the sanitary situation and regulations in New York. If an in-person event is not possible then we will need to adapt to a virtual one.
