The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is hiring Environmental Trainees (35 Hour) for the Bureau of Materials Management and Compliance Assurance (MMCA), Waste Engineering and Enforcement Division (WEED).

The Waste Engineering and Enforcement Division (WEED) within the Bureau of Materials Management and Compliance Assurance is responsible for the oversight of the proper management of solid waste, hazardous wastes, pesticides and ensuring sustainable materials management in accordance with applicable statutes and regulations. The goals of WEED are accomplished through permitting, enforcement, public education and outreach.

The Environmental Trainees for this target class will receive training under the direction of a supervisor or senior staff for a period of up to three (3) years. Promotion to Environmental Analyst 1 (35 Hour) will occur after successful completion of the training program.

  • Salary Note: During the first year of training, Environmental Trainees with a Bachelor's degree earn $47,229 per year, and Environmental Trainees with a Master's degree earn $48,933 per year. During the second year of training, the salary increases to $54,041 per year.

These hybrid positions are full-time on first shift, 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM and based out of DEEP Headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Within the Waste Engineering and Enforcement Division, the Environmental Trainees will perform a wide variety of increasingly advanced duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting staff of a higher grade in the Waste Engineering and Enforcement Division in the performance of the following tasks:
  • Conduct site investigations of solid and hazardous waste facilities;
  • Assist with the evaluation and development of project modifications, alternatives, and special conditions to avoid, minimize, and mitigate impacts to natural resources, related to the management of solid and hazardous wastes;
  • Provide technical assistance to local, regional, state, and federal officials, stakeholders, partners, and the public as needed;
  • Evaluate projects, detailed site plans, and other environmental reports and assist with making determinations on their consistency with environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Assist in providing testimony at public hearings on behalf of the Department regarding natural resources and environmental issues.
  • Review and analyze detailed site plans, environmental reports, analytical analyses, policies and other hazardous and solid waste documents;
  • Evaluate permit applications to determine related to the management of hazardous waste, solid waste, and recycling;

WORKING CONDITIONS
