Position Information
The Department of English & Modern Languages invites applicants for a twelve month, full-time exempt position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The ESL Coordinator is a hardworking, goal oriented and enthusiastic professional with excellent subject knowledge and a sound understanding of second language acquisition and language learning pedagogy. This position also includes instruction in one of the following critical need languages: Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, Indonesian, Swahili, Turkish, Japanese or Urdu.
The ESL Coordinator will be responsible for providing leadership and developing an English as Second Language Program while supporting the Director of the Office of Global Opportunities at UMES. In addition, the ESL Coordinator will be responsible for the development, coordination, and support of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning, as well as management of ESL Program protocols, procedures, and certificates.

Responsibilities
  • Recruit, screen, interview, and recommend ESL instructional personnel.
  • Coordinate screening for language support program eligibility.
  • Plan, improve, and oversee testing programs for the assigned subject area
  • Collaborate with faculty and campus principals in developing and supervising the instructional programs in assigned subject area
  • Maintain an inventory of materials and equipment specific to ESL and second language acquisition.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Work with Global Opportunities @UMES staff to analyze and present ESL student growth and achievement data.
  • Instruct up to three language courses per semester.
  • Coordinate and supervise UMES ESL program and assist Global Opportunities @UMES Director in day-today operations.
  • Maintain all data required for state and federal reports.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to use researchbased principles of effective instruction of English Learners.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 5years teaching experience.
  • Teaching English as Second Language certificate.
  • Must have the ability to keep multiple stakeholder groups, including, teachers, staff, volunteers and partners informed of critical issues, activities and schedules.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to use research based principles of effective instruction of English Learners.
  • Demonstrated success in working with students at Minority Serving Institutions (MSI).
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational and technology skills.
  • Must have an excellent work ethic, positive attitude, flexibility and willingness to perform tasks assigned.
  • Fluent in at least one critical need language such as Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, Indonesian, Swahili, Turkish, Japanese or Urdu
  • Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and teachers.
  • Must have a desire to continue professional development.
  • Excellent organization skills and an ability to coordinate multiple tasks and activities.
  • Must have travel abroad or other overseas experiences that include working with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Master’s degree or PhD in Second Language Acquisition, Teaching English as a Second Language, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success in working with students as MSI’s
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and work effectively with external constituencies and stakeholders including public and private organizations.
  • Evidence of development of productive collaborative partnerships across academic units.
  • Administrative experience in academia.

  • Ability to develop and deliver training to adult learners.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and management skills and relate positively to the staff.

Certifications/Registrations
  • Teaching English as Second Language certificate.
