Job Description

Duties

The Engineering Technician (Mechanical) is responsible for installing, repairing, overhauling, rebuilding, modifying, testing and troubleshooting integrated mechanical and electrical systems.

In this position, you will:

  • Performs analysis to ensure cost effective utilization when dealing with vendors.
  • Assists Agency Fleet Manager and Mobile Asset Supervisor with conducting regularly scheduled inventories, disposal of surplus and resolving discrepancies.
  • Advises the supervisor of shop stock needs, services parts, and supplies.
  • Analyzes, evaluates and reports on complex mechanical and electrical systems operations.
  • Troubleshoots mechanical and electrical systems such as automotive diesel and gas repair assets, Diagnostic Equipment, AC/ Air conditioning, EV Electric Motor Repair, etc.

  • Work requires travel away from the normal duty station.
  • Must be available to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations. Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as installing, repairing, inspecting, performing technical diagnostics, and making repairs to Mobile Asset Equipment (gasoline, diesel, electric and other alternative fuel sources).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree Automotive Engineering Technology may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirements.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  • Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and practices applicable to major integrated mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Skill in developing, implementing, and assisting with the fleet management service program.
  • Skill in maintaining shop stock needs, services parts, and supplies.
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate, and report on operations of complex mechanical and electrical systems.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category.
