Intern Program:


The paid Summer Internship Program is an opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a full-time BNSF employee. As an intern at BNSF, you’ll be given real-life, impactful assignments that will put your skills and education into practice. Your summer project will combine classroom experience and real-life business situations to provide value-added work to BNSF. The program is designed to identify students who will be hired by BNSF as full-time Management Trainees after they graduate. During your summer internship, you will get the chance to network with peers, our Business Resource Groups, and Senior Leaders throughout the BNSF network.

RELOCATION WILL BE REQUIRED:


  • Please refer to BNSF’s operating system at www.bnsf.com (see System Map).
  • A candidate must be willing to be relocated to any location across the BNSF system for the training program.
  • Relocation assistance may be provided to those who are moving more than 50 driving miles from their permanent residence.

The objective of our Summer Internship Program is to find students that will join us after graduation as part of our Management Trainee Program
  • The Summer Internship Program provides interns an opportunity to learn more about how our efficient, safe, and sustainable rail network supports the global supply chain. Interns gain experience in our Track, Engineering Services, Structures, Signal, Mechanical, Transportation, and Environmental departments in order to learn what it’s like to work at BNSF full-time.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • The program begins with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas where interns receive a company overview and network with company leaders.
  • The remaining time will be spent supporting ongoing projects and completing on-the-job field training conducted at assigned training location which will include numerous job shadows across multiple departments.


Engineering Track and Engineering Structure & Services (ES&S):


  • Engineering leaders are responsible for the SAFETY of their teams, PLANNING/SCHEDULING of required maintenance and repairs, and VERIFYING the quality of work completed.
  • ES&S leaders are responsible for the SAFETY of their teams, MANAGING THE FINANCES & SCHEDULES of their projects, & COMMUNICATING with project stakeholders.
  • Interns will shadow positions such as Supervisor Engineering Support, Assistant Roadmaster, Roadmaster, and Division Engineer to gain boots on the ground experience
  • The Track Department is responsible for INSPECTING, MAINTAINING, REPAIRING, AND CONSTRUCTING our track infrastructure which includes rail, ties, and ballast to meet BNSF’s standards.
  • The ES & S Department is responsible for EXECUTING THE CAPITAL EXPANSION & REPLACEMENT OF BNSF INFRASTRUCTURE & MANAGING PROJECTS interfacing with BNSF right-of-way. Some project types include the expansion of BNSF terminals & hubs, main lines, facilities, the repair & replacement of structures, & oversight of public projects and utility crossings.


TRAVEL:


  • Frequent and extensive travel over a large geographic region will be required.


WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Work around heavy and moving machinery.
  • Work in a 24 x 7 operations environment including nights, weekends, evenings, and holidays, and available for emergency situations.
  • Workaround electronics, including electric currents.
  • Hours are irregular with a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
  • Work in and around bridges in elevated locations.


SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT:


  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future.
  • Have four (4) years or less of professional work experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held pursuing a degree in high school and/or college.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Have reliable transportation during the duration of my internship to and from assigned BNSF location.
  • Ability to work in a 24/7 environment.
  • Anticipate to have at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA with a degree in Engineering OR a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA with a non-Engineering degree.
  • Able to work in a shop, terminal, or field environment, climb on ladders and walk on uneven surfaces safely.
  • Able to travel up to 75% of the time based on business need.
  • Able to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire, for the summer, and travel to other locations as required.
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
  • Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree from an accredited university, and will complete my degree no earlier than Fall 2024, Spring 2025, Fall 2025, Spring 2026, or Fall 2026.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Pursuing a degree in pursuing a degree in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, etc.), Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Construction Management, Business, OR a similar degree program


HOURS OF WORK:


  • Hours are irregular with a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Schedule could involve nights, weekends, and holidays, as BNSF is a 24 X 7 work environment.
