JOB DESCRIPTION:


The Management Trainee (MT) Program is specifically designed to develop leaders who will drive the future of our organization. This training program is approximately 6 months in length and includes both classroom and on-the-job training. You will gain experience in our Track, Engineering Services, Structures, Signal, Mechanical, Transportation, and Environmental departments. With challenging work, the desire to learn, and the ability to develop relationships, career opportunities are endless.


TRAINING:


THE ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT TRAINEE PROGRAM BEGINS WITH A FAST-PACED, INTENSIVE TRAINING PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES:


  • Associated on-the-job field training conducted at assigned location
  • Three (3) weeks of technical (e.g. rules, safety) and personnel training conducted at our Technical Training Center (TTC) in Overland Park, KS
  • One (1) week orientation conducted at our company headquarters in Fort Worth, TX
  • Training lasts approximately 6 months


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Engineering Track and Engineering Structure & Services (ES&S):


  • Trainees will shadow positions such as Supervisor Engineering Support, Assistant Roadmaster, Roadmaster, and Division Engineer to gain boots-on-the-ground experience
  • Engineering leaders are responsible for the SAFETY of their teams, PLANNING/SCHEDULING of required maintenance and repairs, and VERIFYING the quality of work completed.
  • ES&S leaders are responsible for the SAFETY of their teams, MANAGING THE FINANCES & SCHEDULES of their projects, & COMMUNICATING with project stakeholders.
  • The Track Department is responsible for INSPECTING, MAINTAINING, REPAIRING, AND CONSTRUCTING our track infrastructure which includes rail, ties, and ballast to meet BNSF’s standards.
  • The ES & S Department is responsible for EXECUTING THE CAPITAL EXPANSION & REPLACEMENT OF BNSF INFRASTRUCTURE & MANAGING PROJECTS interfacing with BNSF right-of-way. Some project types include the expansion of BNSF terminals & hubs, main lines, facilities, the repair & replacement of structures, & oversight of public projects and utility crossings.


UPON COMPLETION OF THE MANAGEMENT TRAINEE PROGRAM:


  • Management trainees will likely be placed in a Supervisor Engineering Support position (career progression after this is employee-driven)-see below for more information on this position
  • Trainees will receive a salary increase upon placement into permanent assignment
  • Relocation will likely be required upon placement into permanent assignment


SUPERVISOR ENGINEERING SUPPORT INFORMATION & RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Responsible for supporting 3 functional areas: Track, Signal, and Structures
  • Provide various administrative support functions to the Engineering First Line Supervisor (FLS) including, but not limited to management of scheduled manpower activity, capital plan coordination and oversight, material management, claims management, re-collectible activity management, safety management, equipment, and vehicle fleet management
  • Provide leadership vacation relief and weekend coverage
  • Accurately process and code all invoices within 15 days of receipt and produce accurate reports of cost, vehicle, safety, and flag exceptions for the FLS within the timeframe required by each report
  • This is not an exhaustive list of the position’s duties


WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Work in a 24 x 7 operations environment including nights, weekends, evenings and holidays, on-call or available for emergency situations
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet)
  • Work in and around bridges in elevated locations
  • Hours are irregular with a minimum of 40 hours per week
  • Work around heavy and moving machinery
  • Workaround electronics, including electric currents


TRAVEL:


  • Frequent and extensive travel over a large geographic region will be required.


SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT:


  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Anticipate to have at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA with a degree in Engineering OR a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA with a non-Engineering degree.
  • Have four (4) years or less of professional work experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held pursuing a degree in high school and/or college.
  • Able to work in a shop, terminal, or field environment, climb on ladders and walk on uneven surfaces safely.
  • Ability to work in a 24/7 environment.
  • Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future.
  • Able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire and to relocate within upon career progression and/or as business needs.
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Graduate degree from an accredited university to be completed prior to hire OR I have obtained a degree within the past four (4) years.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Able to travel up to 75% of the time based on business needs.
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Completed a degree (or anticipated degree) in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, etc.), Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Construction Management, Business, OR a similar degree program.
