The Work Unit


Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response


The Communicable Disease Branch’s purpose is to monitor, investigate, and control epidemic and communicable diseases affecting the public health in Colorado, as required under Colorado statute, including enteric diseases, invasive bacterial diseases, respiratory diseases, vaccine preventable diseases, zoonotic diseases, foodborne and waterborne diseases, tuberculosis, and healthcare-associated infections.


What You Will Be Doing


This position exists in the Vaccine Preventable and Invasive Disease (VPID) Unit to extract, compile, analyze, and transmit data associated with Active Bacterial Core Surveillance and Enhanced Pertussis Surveillance. This position assures that demographic and clinical data is accurately collected and reported to CDC. This position ensures that data specifications are up to date and manages the multiple components of ordering and delivering epidemiological and laboratory data electronically.


Responsibilities Of The Position Include But Not Limited To


Data Management


  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems with data correctly presenting in the extract.
  • Use other sources (vital statistics records, CIIS, etc.) to conduct record matches and complete data fields.
  • Collect data for EIP special studies as needed.
  • Participate in audits of case reports based on line lists provided by participating labs and review findings.
  • Uses SAS to extract data from disease reporting databases and transmits EIP data to CDC.
  • Participates in the maintenance of databases to track reported cases and completion of record reviews.
  • Provides information on necessary data fields for data entry.
  • Complete medical chart abstractions, complete data edits, and complete other grant-required activities as instructed such as vital records matches and case geocoding.
  • Participate in CDC calls for ABCs and EPS.
  • Review disease reports to identify changes in clinical presentation of reported cases of group A (GAS) and group B streptococcus (GBS) and provide case data for these outbreak investigations.
  • Works with the medical records abstractor to perform chart abstraction and data entry, completes data cleaning, and provides data for special projects.
Specimen Management and Coordination


  • Address missing or discrepant isolate information provided by CDC in data edits.
  • Track completeness of isolate data.
  • Identify gaps in isolate submission.
  • Review CDC lab reports to identify changes in typing distribution of reported cases of group A (GAS) and group B streptococcus (GBS) and request additional testing if necessary.
  • Coordinate with hospital partners to ensure a high rate of isolates submission to CDC.
  • Coordinate with CDPHE lab to send isolates and complete isolate shipping spreadsheets.
  • Participate in audits of isolate submission based on line lists provided by participating labs and review findings.
Data Analysis & Reports


  • Run data quality reports and interpret the identified errors.
  • Summarize data to gather and present metrics that are necessary to monitor the program's ability to meet grant deliverables.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Review ABCs data to identify changes in reported cases of group A (GAS) and B streptococcus (GBS).
  • Provide reporting metrics as requested.
  • Monitor trends in invasive bacterial diseases to identify new risk groups.
  • Provide summary data such as percent of complete chart abstractions and percent of isolates submitted to CDPHE laboratory.

Option 1: Education and Experience


Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Public Health, Data Management, Information Technology, Biostatistics, Health Sciences, Biology, or a field of study closely related to the work assignment.


AND


One (1) year of professional experience in Managing Electronic Health Records, System Interfaces, Data Reporting, Public Health Disease Surveillance, or other closely related experience aligned to the work assigned to the position.


Or


Option 2: Experience ONLY


Five (5) years of professional experience in Managing Electronic Health Records, System Interfaces, Data Reporting, Public Health Disease Surveillance, or other closely related experience aligned to the work assigned to the position.


Or


Option 3: Education ONLY


Master's degree from an accredited institution in Public Health, Data Management, Information Technology, Biostatistics, Health Sciences, Biology, or a field of study closely related to the work assignment.

Preferred Qualifications


In addition to the minimum requirements, the successful candidate in this position will have the following highly desirable experience and competencies:


  • Experience extracting information from medical records
  • Ability to interpret, analyze, summarize data and report findings of analysis
  • Experience using statistical software such as SAS or R to extract and manipulate data
  • Proficiency in navigating computer systems; ability to learn new data systems quickly and to comply with data integrity and security to safeguard all personal identifiable information
  • Relevant experience with the State of Colorado
  • Relevant experience with a public health or other government agency
  • Ability to analyze and compile data into a clear, concise report
  • Experience with the CO Immunization Information System (CIIS)
  • Experience monitoring, assessing and addressing causes of discrepancies within a data collection system


Conditions Of Employment


  • This position requires travel within the State of Colorado, with occasional overnight stays.
  • Critical Status: Must be available in the event of the activation of the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.
  • Pursuant to CDPHE policy, a background check is required for all positions at CDPHE.
  • Critical Status: Must be available in the event of an emergency, (e.g., bio-terrorist attack, chemical attack, disease outbreak or all hazards) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.
