Emergency Room Registration Specialist-Days

Overview:

This position is responsible for processing all Emergency Room admissions for the hospital. The employee maintains the data integrity in the Mater Patient Index of the computer system.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

• Registers Emergency Room patients.
• Maintains patient confidentiality at all times according to the hospital’s established policies and procedures.
• Assists all patients, family members, physicians, visitors, vendors and employees in a friendly, courteous and professional manner.
• Completes admissions as directed by physicians’ orders via ER or direct admissions.
• Explains patient responsibilities related to insurance plans, co-pays and coinsurance.
• Adheres and follows all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
• Review the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) Hospital Outpatient Observation Notification (HOON) forms with non-Medicare observation patients and obtain the patient’s signature of acknowledgment on all forms.
• Provide all patients the HCDPBC Notice of Privacy Practices (NPP) and obtain the patient/guarantor’s signature of acknowledgement.
• Collects co-pays, coinsurance and/or balance due from Emergency Room patients at the time of service.
• Obtains all proper signatures for patient consent.
• Obtains authorization on all admissions at the time of admission, if required by Insurance Carrier.
• Maintains a neat, orderly and safe work area.
• Attends mandatory department and hospital in-service training sessions.
• Complete Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire (MSPQ) for patients traditional Medicare as an active insurance plan.
• Maintains observance of the fire panel, code blue panel and blood bank panel and notifies appropriate hospital personnel in the event that an abnormality occurs as needed.
• Verifies the Emergency Room registrations for accuracy and insurance eligibility.
• Follows all registration requirements under the EMTALA laws.
• Obtain and verify patient demographic information and enters information into the EPIC system.
• Maintain productivity records in accordance with the department’s policies and procedures.
• Ensure that all information is scanned into the patient account.
• Maintains current knowledge of requirements and regulations of specific insurance carriers and corresponding insurance forms, as well as state collection laws and HIPAA as it applies to admitting and registration.
• Work a minimum of one weekend per month.
• Applies the hospital’s principles of safety in all work practices. Reports any identified safety risks or incidents per the hospital’s policies and procedures.
• Appropriately routes patients’ complaints.
• Performs Communication Operator duties as needed.
• Attends and participates in monthly department staff meetings
• Provides written receipts for payments received to the payer.
• Registers after-hours ancillary visits.
• Review CMS’ Important Message from Medicare (IM) s with all inpatients with active Medicare coverage and obtain the patient’s signature of acknowledgment on all forms.
• Reviews and signs off on the Communication Book on a daily basis in accordance with applicable compliance requirements.
• Maintain a monthly registration accuracy rate of 95% or greater.
• Supports the hospital’s mission, vision and values by presenting a positive and polite manner and offering assistance to all customers.
• Updates patient information received from nursing in patient records and logs enter into EPIC patient account.
• Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.
• Verifies insurance coverage and/or verifies and obtain authorization when necessary.
• Follows all infection control and employee health policies and procedures at all times.
• Review CMS’ Medicare Outpatient Observation Notification (MOON) forms with all observation patients with active Medicare or Medicare Advantage (MA) coverage and obtain the patient’s signature of acknowledgment on all forms.
• Assists the Emergency Services Department as needed.

Qualifications:

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

Minimum of two (2) years experience preferred. Knowledgeable in Medicare compliance guidelines, Florida Medicaid and third-party insurance companies preferred.
