Job Description

The School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering seeks an experienced and skilled Electronics Engineer to collaborate with faculty and research team members to create designs, chip fabrication, and support projects for a new research center that will be focusing in the areas of semiconductor and microelectronics engineering. The Electronics Engineer will support design tools, tapeout, characterization, and test of integrated circuits (ICs) to support research in digital, analog, RF, and mixed-signal system-on-chip and hardware accelerators. Incumbent will apply knowledge of engineering principles and practices over a wide technical range that may include complex and conflicting features.
This position requires initiative, independent judgment, and working independently under general direction.

Essential Duties

  • Coordinates with other project group members and supervisor on technical problems.
  • Supports projects on the design and tapeout of integrated circuits.
  • Creates test setup for characterization and measurement of fabricated devices.
  • Coordinates the setup and maintenance of EDA tools, troubleshooting and repair of a wide variety of equipment and instrumentation and/or performs testing and troubleshooting of experimental equipment and systems and performs repairs, modifications or adjustments to eliminate malfunctions.
  • Collaborates with faculty and research team members to create designs and fabricate ICs. Manages electronic design automation (EDA) tools from commercial vendors and provides guidance to tool users as needed.
  • Requisitions components and supplies for engineering projects, interacting with vendors to obtain competitive price and product information to meet schedule requirements. Provides time and materials estimates for executing engineering assignments.
  • Writes specifications for purchase of new equipment. Trains faculty, staff and students in operation of equipment.
  • Performs research relating to specific projects, writes documentation, manuals and reports.
  • Independently plans, schedules, conducts, and/or coordinates detailed phases of engineering assignments while receiving technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field AND four (4) years of engineering or related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Skill in applying advanced engineering principles and procedures.
  • Familiarity with setup, license management of EDA tools
  • Familiarity with PCB design, test set up, and characterization/measurement.
  • Skill in interfacing hardware with equipment and systems.
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of design, simulation, and analysis of ICs.
  • Experience in taping out chips (full chip simulation and validation)
  • Experience in basic project management processes.
  • Knowledge of EDA layout/design tools, chip tapeout, test setup and characterization/test of fabricated chips.
  • Experience with the use of EDA tools for chip design

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
